What is the best portrait lens for the Canon EOS R6 Mark II? I'm looking for a lens that excels in low light and provides beautiful bokeh for portrait photography. I've heard about the RF 70-200mm f/2.8 and the RF 50mm f/1.8, but I'm unsure which would be better for my needs. Any recommendations or experiences would be greatly appreciated!

For creamy bokeh and low-light performance, the RF 85mm f/1.2L DS is a portrait king, though pricey. The RF 50mm f/1.8 is an excellent budget-friendly option with great bokeh, but the 85mm offers a more classic portrait perspective. The RF 70-200mm f/2.8L is versatile but less ideal for tight spaces. Consider the RF 100mm f/2.8 Macro for stunning detail and beautiful bokeh as well.

Tbh I spent ages looking at market prices before I finally switched over to mirrorless. I'm still learning the ropes with my R6 Mark II, but I've been shooting for years and noticed the RF lens market is just... really pricey compared to the old days. I mean, native glass is great but their so expensive lol! I actually went down a rabbit hole looking at third-party stuff and market trends. Basically, I found that using the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R opens up some amazing deals on Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lenses that still perform like beasts on this body. Wait no, I think the Tamron SP 85mm f/1.8 Di VC USD is also a killer value play if you can find it used. Quick tip: Don't ignore the used EF market. You get 95% of the performance for like 40% of the cost of native RF glass!

To add to the point above: honestly, I'm right there with you. Been shooting portraits for over twenty years now, seen every mount change Canon has thrown at us, and moving to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II has actually left me more paralyzed than I expected. I keep looking at the current lineup and comparing it to what I used to get for way less with other systems or the older glass. Ngl, I'm kinda worried about some of these newer designs. Over the years I've learned the hard way that just because a lens is sharp doesnt mean it has soul. I've tried many lenses that look great on paper but feel... sterile? Plus, the way the brand has locked down the mount compared to how open others like Sony or Nikon are becoming is a huge red flag for me. I'm hesitating to drop thousands on a single lens when I feel like I'm being boxed into a corner. You're definitely not alone in being unsure—it's a weird time to be a pro shooter. Just be careful dont rush into a massive purchase just because of the hype. I've seen too many people regret spending five figures on a kit that doesnt actually feel better to use than their old setup. Still trying to figure it out myself...

Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM.

I've been shooting with the RF 85mm f/1.2L USM on my R6 Mark II and it's absolutely stunning for portraits. Yes, it's expensive and heavy, but the image quality and bokeh are unmatched. If your budget allows, this is the dream portrait lens.
