What is the best portrait lens for the Canon EOS R7? I'm looking for a lens that offers a wide aperture for beautiful background blur and sharp images. I’ve heard about a few options, but I’d love to hear from other R7 users about their experiences and recommendations. Are there any budget-friendly choices that still deliver great quality? Thanks in advance for your help!

  • I totally get where Elizabeth is coming from with the adapted glass, but you might want to consider the ergonomics first. The R7 is a relatively light body, and slapping a massive EF L-series lens plus an adapter on it can make the whole setup feel super front-heavy and awkward for long shoots. So far, we've covered some solid ground:
  • The budget-friendly Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM
  • The compact Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN Contemporary for Canon RF
  • The stabilized Canon RF 85mm f/2 Macro IS STM If you're looking for that ultra-wide aperture though, I would suggest checking out the Viltrox AF 75mm f/1.2 Pro Lens for Canon RF. It's designed specifically for APS-C sensors like the one in your R7. Tbh, the data on this lens is impressive... it's incredibly sharp even wide open at f/1.2, which is rare for the price. Just be careful and make sure to keep the lens firmware updated via the USB port, since Canon can be a bit picky with third-party AF communication. It's a bit of a chonk, but for pure portrait rendering, it's basically a cheat code for getting that full-frame look on a crop sensor.

Get the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN for RF mount. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=56mm+1+4+DC+DN+Mount&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=12345&DFF=d50

Tbh, I spent a ton of time doing market research on the EF vs RF roadmap when I first got my R7. While native glass is the future, dont overlook the value in the adapted market. I’ve been shooting with the Canon EF 85mm f/1.4L IS USM via an adapter, and the optical quality and compression on the APS-C sensor is just unreal. It basically behaves like a 136mm equivalent, which is pretty much the industry standard for tight headshots. In my experience, even some older EF glass has faster autofocus transition than the budget RF STM motors. Quick tip: Grab the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R to unlock the used L-series market. A second-hand Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM is an absolute bokeh monster on the R7 if you have the room to back up.
