The Godox V1 has been my go-to for the R7. The round head produces beautiful, soft light, and it's significantly more affordable than Canon's first-party options. The wireless trigger system is reliable, and I've had no issues with compatibility. Plus, you can expand with other Godox products if you want to build a multi-flash setup later.

Regarding what #10 said about "Yep been there done that. Can confirm everything...", I'm honestly a bit disappointed that macro hasn't been addressed properly yet. The V1 is a beast but it's totally overkill and awkward for close-up shots. I've had issues with the weight balance on my R7 too when trying to shoot small subjects. The thread so far is heavy on the Godox V1 and the pricey Canon EL-10, which are fine for weddings, but maybe not the best for what you actually asked for. Here is what I'd look at instead:

• Godox MF12-K2 Macro Flash - this is a game changer for macro. It attaches to the front of the lens so you dont get those weird shadows.
• Godox TT685II-C Speedlite - basically the standard workhorse. It's cheaper than the V1 and uses AA batteries which is easier for travel imo.
• Nissin i60A Flash for Canon - super compact and punchy for family gatherings without being annoying. Unfortunately, the R7 multi-function shoe is kinda fragile and picky with older pins. You'll likely need the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter to keep things secure and weather-sealed. Let me know if you need help picking between these tho!
