So I finally upgraded from my phone to a real camera and got the Canon Rebel T7 for a steal on Marketplace! Im so hyped to start taking better photos of my kids and stuff but man the built-in flash is just... its bad. Like really bad. Everything looks washed out and flat and has those weird harsh shadows. My cousins 30th birthday is coming up next Saturday in this super dim restaurant so I really need to grab an external flash before then so I dont ruin the shots. Ive been looking around and I think I narrowed it down to two options but I cant decide.

First is the Godox TT600 which everyone seems to love because its cheap and reliable but I heard it might be tricky for a beginner since it's manual only? Then there is the Neewer NW-670 which is like 50 or 60 bucks and says it has TTL which sounds way easier for a newbie like me. My budget is strictly under $80 because I already spent way too much on the camera body itself lol. Is the TTL on the Neewer actually worth it for a fast-paced party or should I just suck it up and learn the manual settings on the Godox? Also I read something about the T7 missing a center pin on the hot shoe so now I am worried if these will even work at all... has anyone tried these with the T7 specifically?

I dealt with that T7 shoe issue at a party once! Grab the Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash for Canon tbh since its affordable and the firmware actually supports that missing pin! Amazing flash!

To add to the point above: that missing center pin on the Rebel T7 is such a headache for beginners. I remember trying to help a friend set up their gear for a graduation party and we spent like an hour googling why the flash wouldnt fire before we realized Canon had basically nerfed the hot shoe. It totally killed the vibe and we ended up with super grainy, dark photos because we had to rely on the built-in pop-up flash. Since you are looking to stay under 80 bucks, here is the reality of the situation:

  • You really need a flash with firmware that specifically supports the T7. The Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash for Canon is usually around 85, but you can often find them on sale or open box for under 75 if you look around.
  • TTL is honestly non-negotiable for a party. Trying to dial in manual settings while people are moving and the waiter is walking by is just gonna lead to missed shots.
  • Don't forget about power. If you buy cheap alkaline batteries, the flash will take forever to recycle or be ready for the next shot. I swear by Panasonic Eneloop AA Rechargeable Batteries 4-Pack because they actually keep up with the pace of a birthday party. Just to recap what everyone is saying... stay away from the Neewer NW-670 TTL Flash for this specific camera body. It is a gamble that probably wont pay off because of that pin issue. Stick with the Godox 350C and you will actually be able to focus on the party instead of fighting your gear.

Congrats on the T7! Honestly, you gotta be really careful with that specific camera choice tho. Canon did something kinda annoying and removed the center sync pin on the hot shoe for the T7, which means a lot of budget flashes like that Neewer or older Godox units wont fire at all. Its a huge headache for beginners and I would hate for you to show up to the party with a flash that doesnt even pop. I would suggest looking into these instead:

  • Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash for Canon
  • This is usually right around your $80 limit. It supports TTL and it definitely works with the T7's weird hot shoe.
  • Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon
  • If you can find this used, jump on it. It is way more powerful for big rooms. Manual flash at a party is gonna be a total struggle since you're just starting out. You really want TTL so the camera can adjust the light automatically while youre busy chasing kids around. Feel free to ask more about the settings once you get it... I am happy to walk you through the bounce flash basics!
