Ive been shooting on the Sony system for like six years now and honestly I thought I had the gear acquisition syndrome under control but man the itch is back. Im still rocking my old A7III which has been a total tank for me but I just booked this huge three-week project in Japan for late August and I really want to upgrade to the A7RV for that extra resolution and the autofocus which I hear is just insane. I know my way around the specs and Ive got a decent collection of glass already like the 24-70 GM II so Im not a newbie to the ecosystem but I have never actually tried to time a brand new purchase before.
Usually I just buy used gear off Fred Miranda or eBay when a good deal pops up but for this Japan trip I want a fresh body with a full warranty just in case something goes sideways overseas. Im sitting on a budget of about $3000 and Ive been refreshing B&H and Adorama like a crazy person every morning. The thing is prices seem to be bouncing around all over the place lately and I keep seeing these weird instant rebates that disappear after like 24 hours and it is driving me nuts. I feel like Im always five minutes too late to the party.
Is there a specific site or some kind of alert system that actually works for Sony gear? Ive used CamelCamelCamel for Amazon stuff obviously but it doesnt seem to catch the specialized photo retailers very well and they often have better bundles anyway. Im looking for something that tracks:
- price drops across the major authorized dealers like B&H or Focus Camera
- when those EDU discounts actually stack with seasonal sales
- open-box alerts for the high-end bodies
- some kind of history graph so I know if Im actually getting a deal or just a fake sale price
I really want to pull the trigger before the end of the month so I have time to test the new menus and setup my custom buttons before the flight. Does anyone have a go-to tracker that isnt just a generic price comparison tool?

Saw this today. Over the years, Ive found Greentoe usually beats retail flash sales. Before I give more advice tho, do you actually have access to a verified EDU account?

Honestly, I have been obsessing over this same thing lately! I am not 100 percent sure if there is one universal tool, but I think using the B&H Photo Video Price Tracker is fantastic for monitoring those specific fluctuations. Someone told me it catches EDU stacks better than generic sites. Definitely check the open-box section every morning at 9am EST. It is such an amazing camera, youre gonna love it for the Japan trip!
