I leave for my trip to Iceland in literally 12 days and I am freaking out a bit because I still havent figured out my tripod situation. I just upgraded to the new Canon EOS R6 V and I am planning to pair it with the 24-105mm f/4 L lens for landscape shots. Since Iceland is notoriously windy and I am doing a lot of hiking, I need something super stable but also lightweight enough to pack in my carry-on.

I have narrowed it down to two main options but I am completely torn.

First option is the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. I love how packed down it gets, and the design seems perfect for travel. But it is pretty pricey at around 650 bucks and I have heard some mixed reviews about the ball head adjustment being annoying to use with heavier gloves, which I will definitely be wearing in Iceland.

Second option is the Ulanzi Zero Y Carbon Fiber. It is way cheaper, around 350, and seems to copy a lot of the Peak Design features, but I am worried about the build quality holding up in freezing wet conditions. Will it hold the R6 V securely without sagging?

Here is what I need:

  • Budget: under 700 USD max but would love to spend less if possible
  • Weight: under 3 lbs since I am hiking miles everyday
  • Packability: must fit inside a standard Peak Design 30L backpack
  • Use case: long exposures in windy coastal areas

Leaning toward the Peak Design just for peace of mind with the warranty, but the Ulanzi is saving me a ton of cash. Has anyone used either of these specifically with the R6 V setup? Which one should I pull the trigger on?

Ngl, for Iceland you want the Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod. The wind there is brutal and the PD is just built better for harsh weather. The ball head is definitely annoying with gloves, but you get used to it. The Ulanzi Zero Y Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod is decent for the price, but its center column setup feels way less stable when things get really gusty.
