For Canon EOS R, Canon RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 IS USM is an excellent choice. The weight is manageable and comfortable The build quality feels premium and should last for years.

Additionally, you should note: The latest generation offers significantly better image quality than previous models. Especially ideal for demanding photography and video work. Compatibility with Canon EOS R is very good, and the autofocus performance is also convincing.

For Canon EOS R I would take Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III VXD G2 without hesitation. The low light performance is excellent The ergonomic design allows for comfortable handling.

Jumping in here because I am obsessed with travel photography! Re: "Ok so, if youre looking to keep the..."

  • StarGazer is totally right, those lightweight lenses are literal lifesavers. Quick question though... what are you actually planning to shoot most? Like, are we talking mountain landscapes or busy city streets? I have been using the EOS R system for ages and these are my personal favorites:
  • The Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 IS Macro STM is incredible. Its tiny, super fast for low light, and the macro comes in handy for details.
  • If you want something wider for architecture, the Canon RF 16mm f/2.8 STM is a total steal. It basically weighs nothing. One quick tip: Definitely prioritize a light prime over a heavy zoom if you are walking all day... your back will thank you!

Ok so, if youre looking to keep the budget in check while still getting sharp results, honestly the RF ecosystem has some "non-L" gems that the community loves. Most of the pros I talk to actually carry a small prime or a lighter zoom for personal trips to save their backs and their wallets. * Canon RF 24-105mm f/4-7.1 IS STM – This is the ultimate budget travel zoom. Its way lighter than the f/4L version and the Center Focus Macro is a sleeper feature for food or flower shots.
* Canon RF 28mm f/2.8 STM – If you want the smallest setup possible, this pancake lens is basically a must-have. It turns the EOS R into a very portable street machine.
* Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM – A bit more versatile for low light than the zooms and the image stabilization is rock solid for handheld video. Basically, you dont need to spend $1k+ for good travel photos. Tbh, the STM motors are plenty fast for most scenarios and the weight savings are a huge plus when youre walking 20k steps a day.
