Finally got the R1 in and honestly the autofocus is scary fast but I’m noticing my old EF lenses just arent cutting it anymore. I’ve been shooting sports for like 15 years and I’ve never seen this much detail so now I’m getting obsessed with micro-contrast.

I’ve got a huge track event coming up in June and I need something that is stupid sharp edge-to-edge. Budget is flexible because I need the best for this client. I was looking at the RF 85mm 1.2 but then I saw some stuff about the 135mm being even sharper? What’s the absolute sharpest prime Canon has right now for this body?

The Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM is technically the sharpest thing Canon makes right now. Ive analyzed the data and it definitely edges out the 85mm for peripheral sharpness. Quick tip: shoot at f/2.0 to hit that absolute sweet spot of resolution and light gathering. Its a total game changer for track events where the AF needs to be instantaneous.

Just saw this and wanted to chime in. While the 85 is legendary, you might want to consider the Canon RF 135mm f/1.8L IS USM instead. Its technically the sharpest prime in the RF lineup right now. Just be careful tho because the focus plane is razor-thin at f/1.8. I would suggest practicing your tracking before the big event to make sure your hit rate stays high.

I've shot track for years and distance matters. I think a certain super-tele was sharper but IIRC...

  • Sidelines?
  • Pits? Where exactly are you standing? That really dictates which prime is best.
