I finally pulled the trigger and upgraded to the Canon EOS R6, and I’m absolutely loving it so far! However, transitioning from my old DSLR, I’m realizing my current gear might need an update. I've heard the battery life can be a bit short, so I’m wondering if stocking up on extra LP-E6NH batteries is priority number one. Also, since this beast has such high burst rates, are UHS-II SD cards really necessary to avoid buffer issues? I’m also looking into the EF-EOS R adapter for my older glass. Beyond the basics, what are the must-have accessories you’d recommend to a new owner to really get the most out of this camera?
In my experience, u definitely need the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery and SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-II SDXC for that crazy burst speed!! its highkey amazing, I love mine!!
dude, unfortunately cheap batteries failed me. i grabbed:
- Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip
- Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II Card
basically V60's 60MB/s min write handles that 20fps burst!! lol
Building on the earlier suggestion about the adapter and storage, I'm curious what kind of subjects you're planning to shoot most often? Like, are you doing heavy burst wildlife or just slower-paced portraits? It really changes how much you need to dump into the high-end tech specs. Personally, I've been super satisfied using a PD-compatible power bank instead of buying four or five extra batteries. It works well for long days and is way more budget-friendly. The Anker 737 Power Bank 24000mAh handles the R6 power delivery requirements perfectly. For storage, if you want to save some cash without losing performance, the Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-II is a beast. It's technically a V90 card but usually costs way less than the big name brands. Honestly, having that extra write speed for the buffer to clear is worth it, even if you're trying to keep the budget tight. Let me know what your main usage is and I can probably give you some more specific data on what you'll need...
Just saw this thread and congrats on the R6! Ngl, when I first made the switch from my old 5D, I tried to cut corners to save some cash and it bit me. I picked up a cheapo third-party EF adapter because the brand-name one was backordered, and man, the autofocus was just... off. It would hunt forever in low light or just randomly drop the connection (which is super frustrating mid-shoot). I ended up missing some great shots because of it. Also, just a heads up on the USB-C charging side of things—I learned the hard way that these mirrorless bodies are way more finicky about power than the old DSLRs. I tried using a random brick and cable I had lying around for my phone and it barely registered, plus it made the camera get weirdly warm. Tbh, if you're gonna rely on this for anything serious, stick to the stuff you know wont flake out on you. Its way better than dealing with a frozen screen when you’re actually out in the field (at least thats what worked for me).
Caught up on this thread today and honestly it brings back memories of when I first swapped to the R6. I was super stressed about the battery thing too, but before you go spending hundreds, just be careful about the hype. I actually managed to stretch my old batteries from my DSLR for a while by being really aggressive with the power settings and turning off the constant autofocus search. I even modified my old DSLR bag with some scrap foam to fit the R6 and adapter better so I didnt have to drop cash on a new mirrorless-specific bag right away. I would suggest taking it slow and seeing what actually bugs you during a real shoot before buying a mountain of gear. A couple things I am curious about tho:
