so i basically just blew my whole savings on this canon r5 because im going to iceland in two weeks and i wanted the best pictures possible but honestly i have no clue what im doing. the box arrived today and its way more intimidating than i thought it would be. i tried to look up stuff online but people keep talking about cfexpress cards and v90 sd cards and it sounds like another language to me? i didnt realize i had to buy so much extra stuff just to get it to work properly.

im really worried im gonna get out there in the cold and realize i forgot a specific cable or something or that the battery is gonna die in five minutes. i have maybe like 300 or 400 bucks left in my budget after the camera body and one lens so i cant go crazy but i dont want to break this thing or miss the northern lights because i was being cheap. should i get a screen protector? do i need a special bag for the rain because i heard it gets really wet there?

sorry if these are really stupid questions i just feel way out of my depth here and i dont want to mess this up since it's a once in a lifetime trip. what are the absolute bare minimum things i need to buy right now so i dont regret it later...

Re: "Man, you picked a beast..." what lens are you taking? I once ruined glass in Iceland.

Just seeing this now! Iceland is amazing, I went last year and nearly cried when my battery died right during the lights. Since you're on a budget, grab these:

Man, you picked a beast of a camera for Iceland. I've been using the R5 for a couple years now and honestly, I'm so satisfied with how it handles rugged environments. Dont sweat the technical jargon too much, we've all been there. Since you're on a budget but need speed, you definitely need a CFexpress card. I've had zero complaints with the ProGrade Digital CFexpress Type B Gold 256GB. It's fast enough for those high-res bursts and way more affordable than the top-tier Delkin cards. On the other hand, the SanDisk Extreme PRO CFexpress Type B 128GB is super reliable and easy to find, but the price-per-gigabyte is usually a bit higher. I personally think the ProGrade is the better value for a long trip where you'll be taking a ton of photos. For the weather, I've been really happy with the Peak Design Shell Camera Rain Cover Medium. It works well because it's thin enough to keep in a pocket but keeps the spray off the sensor when you're near those waterfalls. Some people use plastic bags, but this is way more secure. Also, you absolutely need an extra Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery. The cold in Iceland drains them way faster than you'd think. I've tried cheaper third-party brands, but they dont communicate with the camera as well and you lose your high-speed shooting modes. Stick with the genuine Canon one for peace of mind. You're gonna have a blast, just keep those spare batteries warm in your pocket so they dont lose charge!

I've spent a lot of time analyzing how these high-end bodies perform in sub-zero temps, and unfortunately, the reality is that many budget accessories just dont meet the technical requirements for stable power delivery. I once took some generic batteries to a shoot in the mountains and the voltage drop was so severe that the camera just shut down despite showing 40 percent charge. It was a massive disappointment and I missed some great shots because the cells couldnt handle the thermal load.

  • Go with anything from Sony when it comes to card readers; their build quality for data transfer is way more reliable than the cheap plastic ones.
  • Just get official spares from Canon. Honestly, I've had issues with every other brand when the temperature drops and the R5 starts pulling more current.
  • For the screen, any basic glass protector from SmallRig will do the job without peeling. I also tried those cheap plastic sleeves for the rain once, but they were not as good as expected and let moisture seep into the buttons. Just get a proper rugged cover from Think Tank. You really dont want to risk the weather sealing or have the R5 start acting up because of salt spray hitting the dial seals.
