Honestly so frustrated because my battery keeps dying halfway through shoots in Seattle. My logic was the basic kit would be enough but it isnt and Im getting anxious about buying the wrong gear and breaking it...
So I was thinking maybe a grip or specific cards? What are the actual daily essentials for an EOS R?
Man, I totally feel that frustration. I remember my first trip out to the coast with my R and I genuinely thought one battery would get me through a whole sunset session... boy was I wrong. Halfway through the golden hour, the screen just went black. Unfortunately, these mirrorless bodies eat power way faster than the old DSLRs ever did. I tried using some cheap off-brand batteries I found online to save a few bucks, but honestly, they were garbage. They didnt hold a charge and one actually got stuck in the chamber because it swelled up. Total nightmare. Nowadays I dont leave the house without the Canon BG-E22 Battery Grip. It adds some weight which is kinda annoying, but it lets me use two batteries at once. You really need to stick with the Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery too. The older versions work, but they just dont have the same juice for high-speed shooting and the camera wont even reach its max frame rate without the newer NH version. As for cards, I had a massive scare with a generic brand where the card just gave up halfway through a street shoot. I lost like 200 shots. It was devastating. I swapped everything over to the SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO SDXC UHS-I 200MB/s and havent had a single corruption since. Its a bit pricier than the budget stuff but not having your gear fail in the middle of a rainy Seattle day is worth every penny tbh. Just dont cheap out on the power or storage, it always bites you in the end.
Just catching up on this thread! I was so terrified of ruining my R with weird off-brand power, but I found a fantastic trick! I love using the Anker 511 Charger Nano 3 30W to top off during breaks. It is such an amazing budget-friendly way to keep going without buying tons of batteries! Works perfectly and feels way safer than cheap knockoffs... honestly such a life saver!
