im honestly so fed up with my current flash setup it keeps misfiring and i just missed a huge shot at a wedding because it wouldnt recycle fast enough. it is so embarrassing standing there with a 5D Mark IV and the gear just fails me like that. i have another gig this saturday in Boston and i seriously need a replacement that is 100% reliable because i cant risk this again.

budget is around $450-500 tops. what are the actual top rated external flashes for the 5D Mark IV that won't overheat or lag? i need something professional grade that just works every time i hit the shutter...

Unfortunately, most units just cant handle back-to-back shots without thermal shutdown. I had issues with recycle times on older gear and it was honestly not as good as expected. You should check out the Godox V1-C Li-ion 76Ws Round Head Flash. It has a 1.5s recycle time and a 2600mAh battery. It fits your budget perfectly and wont lag on your 5D IV... honestly a lifesaver.

Jumping in because failing gear at a wedding is a nightmare. Quick tip: check your custom functions for recycling priority so it doesnt lock the shutter while charging. What specific flash were you using? Knowing the brand helps narrow down if its a battery or heat issue. Reliable tanks:

To add to the point above: watch your HSS duty cycles.

  • Avoid 1/1 power
  • Limit HSS usage In my experience, HSS kills guide numbers and doubles recycle times. Tbh its a total trap.
