I recently purchased a Canon EOS R8 and need advice on SD cards. Looking for something that can handle 4K video without buffering issues. What speed class is recommended? UHS-II necessary or overkill?
Thanks!
> UHS-II necessary or overkill? Honestly, it’s definitely necessary. I spent ages doing market research before I picked up my R8 because I’ve been burned by card failures in the past. I’m a bit overly cautious (maybe too much lol), so I actually bought two different sets from different manufacturers just to compare real-world reliability. What I found is that the big name brands we see everywhere aren't always the most stable when you're pushing high 4K bitrates for long sessions. One of the ones I used to use—a very popular market leader—actually started overheating and throttled the write speed on me once, which was TERRIBLE. Since then, I’ve shifted my focus to brands that use higher-quality NAND flash. My current setup involves a slightly more "boutique" brand that I found after digging through some technical white papers. Basically, don't just look at the speed on the box; look for consistency. For the R8, the buffer clears so much faster with a solid UHS-II card, but the reliability is what really matters. You don't want to see that "recording stopped" message right in the middle of a shoot... it's literally the WORST feeling haha.
I've been using the SanDisk Extreme Pro UHS-II with my R8 for about 6 months now. Zero buffering issues with 4K60p. Definitely go UHS-II - the R8's card slot supports it, and you'll want that write speed for high bitrate video. I'd recommend at least 128GB if you're shooting video regularly. The 64GB filled up surprisingly fast for me.
Any uhs ii sd card is recommended.
