I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II and need recommendations for a good flash unit. I mainly shoot portraits and some events. My budget is around $300-400, but I'm flexible for something truly worth it.

Anyone using flash with this camera? What's your experience and recommendation?

> I recently upgraded to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II and need recommendations for a good flash unit. tbh I'm still pretty new to this camera but I've been *really* worried about the new multi-function shoe design on the R6II. I'm not 100% sure but I think I heard that some flashes can actually bend the pins if they aren't perfectly compatible or if you don't use that special adapter piece? Since you're doing events you definitely want something that won't just wiggle loose or lose connection in the middle of a shoot because that would be a nightmare basically. I'm honestly still trying to figure out which ones are actually safe to slide on there without worrying about the weather sealing too tho. Like is it better to just stick with stuff that has the new connector built-in or is the adapter reliable enough? I just don't want to risk the camera body by being cheap on the flash connection i guess

Godox V1 is one of the best choices.

Building on the earlier suggestion, the thread seems to favor the Godox V1-C Flash for Canon for price and the Canon Speedlite EL-5 for official support. If you want to keep things safe and reliable for events without overspending, here are a few other ways to go:

  • Godox V860III-C Speedlight is a great alternative to the V1. It uses the same battery but has a standard head, which some people find easier for certain modifiers.
  • Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT is a native option that works well. It is not as powerful as the flagship units but it is very dependable for portraits.
  • Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter is really important if you use any flash that doesnt have the new multi-function gasket. It keeps the connection secure. I am a bit paranoid about the pin situation myself, so I always make sure the flash is seated perfectly before locking. It depends on how much you trust third-party mounts, but sticking with something that has a sturdy foot is usually the best bet for long-term use.
