Looking for the best SD card for my new Canon EOS R8. Need something that can handle high-speed continuous shooting and 4K video without buffering issues. What's the fastest speed card that works well with this camera? Also concerned about durability since I'll be shooting outdoors.

Quick reply while I have a sec but honestly before you go spending a fortune on the fastest thing out there what kind of budget are you working with? Also how often are you actually hitting that buffer because if youre just doing short bursts you might be able to save a lot of cash and still get great performance. Heres my general take on keeping it cost-effective:
* Go with brands like Sony or ProGrade for the best build quality vs price ratio.
* You basically just need to look for any high-end card from a reputable name and itll handle the R8 just fine.
* Focus more on the sustained write speed rating rather than just the peak speed they put in big numbers. Tbh I usually find that the middle-ground cards are the sweet spot for the R8 since its not a heavy professional sports body but let us know if youre planning on shooting 4K for hours at a time or just doing quick clips because that changes the heat management needs too.

I've been shooting with the R8 for about a year now. For general photography, a UHS-II SD card with at least 250MB/s write speed works great. I personally use the SanDisk Extreme PRO V90 and have had zero issues with buffer clearing. If you're planning to shoot 4K60 video regularly, consider going with a card that's V60 rated or higher.

I am honestly so happy i found this post because i have the exact same question and have been dealing with this for like two weeks now... i am mostly satisfied with the camera specs but the card choice is just a total headache.

  • trying to match v90 write speeds to the actual internal buffer depth
  • comparing how different brands handle thermal throttling during long 4k sessions
  • looking for real-world data on card housing durability for rugged outdoor shoots It is basically impossible to find hard data on how the r8 bus handles the fastest cards available. I am still looking for a solid answer too tho and it is kinda frustrating trying to compare all the different brands without any clear benchmarks lol.
