So I have my sisters graduation next weekend and I really need a portrait lens for my R10 because the kit lens just isnt cutting it for that blurry background look. I was looking at the RF 50mm f1.8 since its cheap but then I read about the 1.6x crop factor and now my logic is all messed up... like does that make it too tight for indoor shots? I also saw some people mention the Sigma 30mm but then I need an adapter and thats extra money I dont really have right now. My budgets super tight like under $250 max. Is the 50mm gonna be too long for a crop sensor or should I just go for it?

Honestly, I was in the exact same spot when I first got my R10 for a family wedding last year. I ended up grabbing the Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM and I have been incredibly satisfied with it. Yeah, the 1.6x crop makes it act like an 80mm lens, but for portraits, that is actually a sweet spot because it makes faces look flattering. Here is why I am happy with it:

  • The bokeh is way better than the kit lens, you get that blurry background easily.
  • It is super light, so carrying it all day at a graduation wont tire you out.
  • At under $200, it fits your budget perfectly. It can be a bit tight indoors, but for outdoor graduation shots or stage photos, you just step back a few feet and it works well. I have no complaints about the sharpness... its a steal.

> does that make it too tight for indoor shots? Honestly, yeah. The 1.6x crop is a bummer indoors. That Canon RF 50mm f1.8 STM basically acts like an 80mm, so you'll be backing into walls trying to fit people in. Unfortunately, Canon hasn't released a cheap, native wide prime for the R10 yet, so options are limited under $250. It's not as versatile as I'd hoped for tight spaces, ngl.
