Hey! Looking for the best flash for my Canon EOS R6. So many options! I mainly shoot portraits and some events. Budget is around $500. Any recommendations based on your experience?
For the R6, I'd recommend the Canon EL-10 as solid Canon options. For better value, consider Godox V1Pro at around $329 with excellent ecosystem compatibility, or the Godox V860III-C with wireless TTL and HSS up to 1/8000s. Both third-party options offer the best balance of price, performance, and features. Budget-conscious shooters might consider the Godox TT350 mini flash - works fine with R6 and provides entry into the Godox system for future expansion.
Just found this thread today and man... I am so over the price of gear right now. It is just exhausting trying to find something that wont break the bank but also wont die on you mid-event. I have been through so many flashes over the years and the way the prices keep climbing for the same tech is just ridiculous. Its a total headache trying to stay in budget.
Saved for later, ty!
Yeah, I definitely agree that looking at the third-party ecosystem is the smartest move for the R6 right now. Tbh, unless you're a pro who needs that CPS support, the native Canon options are just way too expensive for what they actually offer in terms of light output. I’ve seen so many people in the community get much better results by spending less on the flash itself and more on high-quality modifiers. Before you pull the trigger though, I've got a couple of questions to help narrow it down: * Are you mostly doing on-camera bounce flash for those events, or are you looking to get the light off-camera for your portraits?
* How important is battery type to you—are you looking for a dedicated Li-ion pack for fast recycling, or do you prefer the flexibility of standard AAs? Honestly, your $500 budget is actually quite a lot if you're smart about it. You could basically get a whole multi-light setup and a wireless trigger for that price if you don't blow it all on a single name-brand unit. It really comes down to how much you're planning to expand later on.
Godox V1: good power, but mine had issues. Check out Profoto A10; pricier, but far more reliable.
Hey! Instead of a traditional flash, have you considered LED panels? The Godox TL60 tube light gives you continuous light for video *and* stills! It's around $300, super versatile with color controls, and no recycle time! Might be worth checking out the specs – I've heard great things about their color accuracy!
Godox V1 is fantastic! Forget pro service, learn flashpoint DIY—saves a fortune!
Unfortunately, the 'best' often means $$$! For your R6, have you considered a used Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT? You can find them around $200-$250. It's not as powerful as the top-end models, and I've had issues with recycle times at full power, but it's great value. Is power really your priority? Might be worth a look before blowing your whole budget.
Beyond features, consider overheating! Some cheaper flashes can fry your R6's hot shoe. Godox V1 is a decent option, but monitor heat during extended event shoots. Protect your camera!
Been running Godox flashes since 2018, zero issues. Market share's exploded; reliability's surprisingly solid based on forum data I've tracked. For your R6, consider a Godox V860III-C. Happy with mine; works well for events and portraits. No complaints after years of use.
