What is the best budget zoom lens for the Canon R100 that I can actually afford before I head to Italy in three weeks? I am honestly so frustrated right now because I thought getting into mirrorless would be simple but the lens prices are killing me. I bought this camera because it was small and cheap but the 18-45mm kit lens it came with is basically useless for anything that isnt right in front of my face.
I spent all night looking at reviews and everyone keeps pointing towards the RF-S 18-150mm as the perfect travel lens but its like 500 bucks and that is way over my budget after paying for my flights. I looked at the RF-S 55-210mm too which is much cheaper but then I read a bunch of stuff saying it is slow and terrible in anything but bright sunlight. I really dont want to be carrying a tripod around Rome at night just to get a decent shot.
Here is what I am considering:
- RF-S 55-210mm (worried about the low light quality)
- Buying an EF to RF adapter and using an old EF-S 55-250mm IS STM
The adapter setup seems bulky though and I am trying to keep things light since we are walking everywhere. Is the 55-210mm really that bad or are people just being gear snobs? I just want something that can zoom in on architecture and maybe some street scenes without it looking like a blurry mess...

Listen, just get the Canon RF-S 55-210mm f/5-7.1 IS STM and stop overthinking it! People online love to complain about slow lenses but for travel photos of buildings and street life, it is honestly fantastic. You bought the R100 for the size, so dont ruin that with a bulky adapter setup! Here is why you should just go for it:
- It weighs almost nothing and literally fits in a jacket pocket.
- The image stabilization is amazing for steady handheld shots.
- It is way more affordable than the 18-150mm right now. I have used both and while the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM is a total beast, the adapter makes the whole rig feel way too front-heavy on that tiny camera body. Rome is for walking and eating gelato, not lugging a heavy gear bag! Just bump up your ISO when it gets cloudy and you will love the results!
