Which external flash works best with Canon EOS 90D and 80D?

I’m currently shooting with both the Canon 90D and 80D for events, but my old gear is finally giving out. I need reliable E-TTL support and fast recycle times for indoor portraits. I’m debating between a native Canon Speedlite or a Godox setup. Which flash offers the best compatibility and performance for these specific bodies?

Similar situation here - I was struggling with recycle lag on my 80D for months. I finally upgraded to the Godox V1-C Round Head Flash and it's AMAZING!! 1. Battery: The 7.2V Li-ion pack is way more stable than AAs.
2. Speed: 1.5s recycle at 1/1 power... it literally saved my flow! Honestly, the technical shift to lithium is HUGE for consistent E-TTL exposure on the 90D. Tbh, I'm never going back!

Totally agree! If the V1 is too much, the Godox V860III-C Speedlite for Canon is a steal. It's got the lithium battery and fast recycle times, right? Honestly *so* much better than AAs. gl!

Oh man, I've highkey been in your shoes. I used to be a die-hard Canon gear snob with my 80D, but then I had a marathon wedding shoot where I went through literally dozens of AA batteries... it was such a pain. I took a gamble on Godox and honestly, I'm never going back. For your 90D and 80D, here is what I recommend: - Godox V1-C Flash for Canon: This is the goat for indoor portraits. The round head gives a softer falloff and the recycle time is insanely fast because of the lithium battery.
- Godox V860III-C TTL Li-Ion Flash for Canon: It's a total workhorse for events and the E-TTL is super reliable on those bodies. - Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT: If you want that 'it just works' peace of mind, this is the native gold standard. Basically, lithium-ion batteries are a total game changer... you wont miss AAs at all. Good luck!

^ This. Also, I'm unfortunately a bit disappointed to see everyone jumping ship to third-party gear so quickly. I've had some issues with E-TTL consistency on non-native setups when things get heated during a shoot, and it just hasn't been as good as expected for me. Not 100% sure about the latest firmware, but I think someone told me there were communication lags with the 90D specifically. IIRC, there were some weird exposure jumps when shooting fast. It's frustrating because native lighting is getting so expensive, but there's a level of reliability with the original brand that I'm not sure the others have fully matched yet. Just my two cents... it's a bit of a gamble when your professional reputation is on the line.
