im so pumped right now because we finally got the green light to revamp the teen lounge at the community center here in south side chicago and ive spent basically the last six hours picking out the coolest stuff. we need about $1500 worth of supplies like those big oversized bean bags, some led strip lights, a bunch of craft kits and even a small popcorn machine. the problem is im stuck on how to actually get people to buy this stuff without it being a total mess.

so i was thinking about just doing a standard amazon wish list because thats what everyone knows how to use right? my logic was that it keeps it simple and people can just click and buy. but then i started worrying because i heard that if multiple people buy the same thing at the same time it doesnt always update fast enough and we might end up with like ten popcorn machines which we definitely do not have the space for and returning stuff is such a headache when it comes from different people.

then i found this thing called share-a-cart which is a browser extension but i dont know if that's asking too much of the donors? like are people really gonna install a whole plugin just to help us out? probably not. i also looked at setting it up as a custom gift list or even a wedding registry even though we arent getting married lol. i thought maybe it would give us better tracking on what's been purchased and maybe a nice landing page for the fundraiser. the wedding registry thing seems to have more features for group gifting which would be huge for the more expensive items like the gaming console we want to get but i dont want it to look unprofessional or weird to the donors who are mostly local business owners.

im leaning towards the wish list but then i saw some people say the amazon storefront or charity list feature is better but i cant find the link for it anywhere in my account settings and im starting to get a bit frustrated with their UI. we really need to get this live by friday so people can start ordering before the grand reopening on the 20th. does the wedding registry trick actually work for non-wedding stuff or is that gonna get my account flagged? i just want the easiest way for someone to click a link and see exactly what we need in their own cart without me having to manually check it every five minutes...

Nice work getting the green light for that lounge. Honestly, i would be very careful with the standard wish list idea because you are totally right about the sync issues... i have seen people end up with duplicates more than once and its a huge pain. I would suggest using a Custom Gift List or a Celebration Registry instead of the standard list. It is basically the same thing but it handles the inventory way better and lets people see exactly what is left.

  • Set it up as a Custom type so it doesnt look like a wedding to the local businesses.
  • Turn on the group gifting toggle for that gaming console so people can chip in $20 or $50 toward it.
  • Make sure the shipping address is hardcoded to the community center so nobody has to ask you for it. Definitely skip the extension tho. Most donors wont install a plugin just to shop. Stick to the registry link since its way more mobile friendly. You got this!
