Which leather half-cases fit the new Canon EOS R8 body?

I honestly am so fed up with how small this Canon R8 feels in my hands and I'm lowkey panicking that I'm gonna drop it or scratch the bottom to pieces before I even get a chance to use it properly. I bought it for a trip to Seattle next Thursday so I'm on a super tight timeline here but finding a leather half-case that actually fits is turning into a total nightmare. I tried one that was marketed for the RP since everyone says they have the same body but it was a complete lie and the fit was so tight I thought I was gonna break the screen hinge trying to get it on.

  • tried the generic megagear one and it was trash
  • need to be able to access the battery door without taking the whole thing off
  • budget is around 60 bucks max

Its just so frustrating that Canon makes these bodies so thin and then nobody makes decent accessories for them right away. I'm looking for something that adds a bit of bulk to the grip too because my pinky just hangs off the bottom and it drives me crazy. My hands are just too big for this thing without some extra padding. Has anyone found a specific brand or a seller on Etsy maybe that has a leather half-case that definitely fits the R8 specifically? I dont want to keep buying and returning stuff when I leave in less than a week...

Re: "Re: "I totally feel your pain with the..." - " I agree that the battery door access is the most critical feature for a daily driver since the R8 battery life is pretty short. If you still want the leather aesthetic over the extension grip, the TP Original Leather Half Case for Canon EOS R8 is likely your best bet for that budget.

  • Engineered with a dedicated flap for the battery and SD card compartment.
  • Constructed from real cowhide which offers better friction for your grip compared to plastic.
  • Adds approximately 12mm to the bottom of the chassis to help with the pinky-hang.
  • Clearance is specifically measured for the R8 screen hinge to prevent the binding you mentioned. It usually retails for about 50 or 55 bucks on various sites. Just make sure you avoid the dual-fit models that claim to support both the RP and R8... those are the ones that usually cause the screen interference. If you order it today, you should have it in time for your Seattle trip.

Re: "I totally feel your pain with the R8..."

  • I would suggest being careful with cheap leather because it often blocks the battery door. I actually gave up on leather and got the Canon EG-E1 Extension Grip.
  • perfect fit
  • massive pinky improvement
  • easy battery access It isnt leather, but it fixes the ergonomics way better for under 60 bucks. If you really need leather, maybe try the JJC Leather Camera Case for Canon EOS R8 and check those shipping speeds!

I totally feel your pain with the R8 sizing. Honestly, Canon really dropped the ball making it this tiny without a proper extension grip. I tried those RP cases too and they are garbage... the screen hinge is slightly different and it just binds up like you found out.

  • SmallRig Leather Case for Canon EOS R8 4212: This is likely your best bet for the trip. It adds enough height so your pinky actually has somewhere to go. Unfortunately, the material feels a bit like plastic, but it fits the R8 perfectly and has battery door access.
  • TP Original Leather Half Case for Canon EOS R8: This one uses real leather and looks way classier. I had issues with the base screw coming loose tho, which is annoying. It is definitely more stylish but doesnt add as much grip bulk as the SmallRig. Id just grab the SmallRig. Its not as premium as id like, but it actually fixes the handling issues.
