Which flash triggers work best for the Canon R8 without being glitchy?
I read the Godox X2T is the standard cheap pick but then saw people saying the R8 hot shoe is weird and needs an adapter for some triggers to even lock in. I'm shooting a friend's wedding in three weeks and need something under 80 bucks that actually stays connected...
Honestly, I've had so many headaches with that new Canon multi-function shoe design. It's really disappointing how they changed the pin layout and made half my old gear unreliable. Since you're doing a wedding, you definitely don't want something that might wiggle loose or skip a shot because the pins didn't align right.
Unfortunately, my older triggers had issues with that weird shoe. Just grab the Godox X2T-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger for Canon since its cheap and actually stays locked in properly.
Like someone mentioned, the shoe design on the R8 is just super disappointing. Its way too shallow and feels fragile compared to my old DSLRs. I tried using some older gear and it just wouldnt fire half the time because the pins are so tiny and precise. If you need reliability for a wedding under 80 bucks, check out the Godox XPro-C TTL Wireless Flash Trigger. Its usually around 70 dollars and the screen is way easier to read when you're in a rush compared to the X2T. But honestly, even with a good trigger, the fit can feel loose on that multi-function shoe. I eventually just bought the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter to make sure things stayed locked in place. Its annoying that we even need an adapter for a basic flash connection, but for a wedding you really dont want to be second guessing if your trigger is still making contact... it feels a bit clunky but at least it stops the glitching.
Oh man I totally feel your stress about the R8 shoe and that upcoming wedding!! Weddings are just so intense and everything has to be perfect or you feel like the world is ending! Honestly I just saw this and it reminds me so much of my cousin Sarahs wedding back in June... it was such a wild ride. She had this beautiful outdoor ceremony planned and then it started pouring like crazy right as they were about to say their vows! I was trying to help her photographer because he looked so overwhelmed... like literally sweating through his shirt! He had a brand new setup and he kept fiddling with the top of the camera because his lights werent popping or something. It was so chaotic because the wind was blowing the decorations everywhere and I was just trying to hold a giant umbrella over his head so his gear wouldnt get fried! We were all running around like headless chickens and I just kept thinking about how scary it is when your equipment starts acting up right when the bride is walking down the aisle! It was seriously the most stressful thirty minutes of my life and I wasnt even the one taking the photos! Tbh it just makes me so nervous thinking about how much can go wrong with these fancy new designs and everything... it really is a lot to handle for a big event like that and Im always so worried about stuff breaking or just not connecting right when you need it most!
