Got a 90D recently for my kids' birthdays and indoor family stuff but the built-in flash is just... not it. Everyone looks like ghosts. I looked at the Canon 430EX III-RT but its pricey for what it is. Then I saw people raving about the Godox V1 or the V860III but I'm kinda confused if the hot shoe pin issue is still a thing with the 90D? I heard some newer Canons had weird pins that didnt work with 3rd party stuff.
Constraints:
Should I just bite the bullet on the Canon brand or is Godox actually reliable?
actually, @Reply #1 - good point! but honestly i think jumping straight to those super expensive models might be overkill for family stuff. i remember when i first got my 90D and felt so frustrated because my kids looked like white sheets in every photo... it was literally the worst! i ended up getting the Godox TT685II-C TTL Flash for Canon and it was a total game changer!! it uses AA batteries instead of the custom lithium pack, but i just use high-quality rechargeables and it lasts forever. plus it saves you a ton of cash. i also played around with the Yongnuo YN685 II Wireless TTL Speedlite for Canon which is even cheaper and feels so sturdy. honestly, i think the TTL mode on the Godox is way more reliable for beginners tho. its so amazing when you finally get that soft light! you'll never go back to that built-in flash again!
@Reply #2 - good point! i saw this earlier but just getting around to answering now. honestly the 90D works with basically everything since it still has that center pin, so dont worry about the compatibility issues you see on those cheaper rebel models. if you want to avoid that ghost look without spending a fortune, Godox is definitely the way to go over the native Canon stuff.
The 90D still has the center sync pin, so Godox works fine. I was nervous about third-party gear too, but they are a decent option for the price.
