Which battery grips and memory cards work best for Canon EOS 90D?

Ive been shooting with Canon for about ten years now, started on an old Rebel and eventually moved to the 70D which I used until the shutter literally gave up on me last month. I just picked up a 90D and the image quality is amazing but I am honestly struggling with the ergonomics and the data speeds. The body feels a bit small in my hands compared to what Im used to and my pinky finger just hangs off the bottom which makes long shoots pretty uncomfortable.

I am looking into getting a battery grip but Im torn. The official Canon BG-E14 is like 170 dollars most places and Im wondering if anyone has had good luck with the third party ones like Neewer or Vello? I used a cheap one on my 70D and it used to lose connection mid-shoot which was a nightmare, so Im a bit nervous about going cheap again but I also have a wedding coming up in three weeks in Seattle and Ive already spent a ton on the new body and a couple of lenses.

Regarding memory cards, the 90D supports UHS-II but I keep seeing conflicting reports online about whether it actually makes a difference in the real world. When Im shooting bursts at 10fps, my current SanDisk Extreme Pro (UHS-I) seems to choke after about 20-30 shots and then the camera just sits there blinking while it writes to the card. Its driving me crazy.

My main requirements are:

  • A grip that wont disconnect or feel creaky when Im using a heavy lens like the 70-200mm
  • Memory cards that can actually handle the 4k video without overheating or stopping
  • Total budget for both is around 250 bucks if I can swing it

Do I really need to shell out for the V90 cards or is V60 enough for this sensor? And is the Canon grip actually worth the 3x price jump over the Vello version? I really dont want to have equipment failure during the ceremony...

Just saw this thread and wanted to chime in since I went through the same headache with my 90D last year. Like someone mentioned, those cheap grips can be a total gamble. Honestly, since you have a wedding coming up, I wouldnt risk a disconnect mid-ceremony. I ended up finding a used Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip on MPB for way less than retail and it feels much more secure when I am lugging around a heavy lens. The weather sealing alone is worth it if you are shooting in Seattle. Regarding the speed, V60 is definitely the sweet spot for this camera. I use the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 128GB and it clears the buffer almost instantly compared to my old cards. You really dont need to pay the premium for V90 unless you are shooting high-bitrate cinema stuff on a different body. I think if you grab a used OEM grip and the ProGrade card, you will stay well under your budget and have zero reliability issues.

Oh man, I totally feel you on the pinky struggle! I grabbed the Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D and its honestly amazing for the price. Never had a disconnect issue even with big lenses! For cards, dont overspend on V90... the Lexar Professional 1667x 128GB SDXC UHS-II is fantastic and handles 4K video perfectly without breaking the bank. Such a lifesaver for long shoots!
