what cheap external flashes actually work with my Canon Rebel T7 without breaking everything? im panicking a bit because i have to shoot my cousins small wedding in a really dim community center next month and i just found out my camera is missing that center pin on the hot shoe. i did some digging and saw people recommending the Godox TT600 but then i read another thread saying it wont work because of the missing pin and i might need the V1 or something way more expensive which i just cant afford right now. my budget is strictly under $100 since i already blew my savings on a nifty fifty lens. i also looked at some Neewer flashes on amazon but the descriptions are super confusing and half the reviews say they work while the other half say they dont for the T7 model specifically. i just need something reliable that wont quit on me during the vows. does anyone know for sure which ones have the right firmware or whatever to bypass that missing pin issue? i really dont want to be the guy who ruined the wedding photos because i bought the wrong gear...

Stumbled upon this discussion and totally remember having that exact same panic! Back when I started, my journey finding a flash for the T7 was basically a mess until I realized TTL communication was the key. I bought and returned three different units before finding one that actually fired consistently. The Godox TT350C Mini TTL Flash finally worked because the firmware handles the missing pin issue through the other TTL contacts. It was a huge relief for my first big community center shoot! It is a fantastic, budget-friendly solution that usually retails for around $85. Truly amazing for the price! Another option I tried was the Yongnuo YN560 IV Speedlite but honestly it was way too finicky with the T7 shoe for my liking. Eventually found that the Godox TT685C Thinklite TTL Flash is the powerhouse for large halls if you can find a deal. It's fantastic seeing how these affordable units can actually compete with the high-end stuff once you get the right firmware. Love it!

I totally get the panic... that missing pin on the T7 is such a headache for us Canon users lol. I've been using Godox gear for years and honestly, I'm super satisfied with how they handled this. You definitely need a flash designed specifically for Canon to bypass that missing center pin.

  • Godox TT350C Mini Flash for Canon: This is the best choice for staying under $100. It's compact and works perfectly with the T7. I've used it for small events and it's very reliable, tho it's a bit slower to recycle since it only takes two batteries.
  • Godox TT685C II Flash for Canon: If you can find this on sale or used, it's the real winner. It has way more power for a big community center. No complaints with mine, it just works every time. Dont buy the TT600 or universal flashes... they wont fire without that pin. Stick with these C versions and you'll be totally fine for the wedding.

Regarding what #3 said about "Same setup here, love it"

  • I have to respectfully disagree with selecting a mini flash for a wedding. While I am very satisfied with Godox gear, the TT350C is just too weak for bouncing light in a large hall or community center. You will likely find the recycle times too slow when the action picks up during the ceremony. The Godox TT685II-C Flash for Canon is a far more reliable workhorse for this setup. It handles the missing pin on the Rebel T7 through the other TTL contacts perfectly. Because it uses four batteries instead of two, it has the stamina needed for a long day of shooting. Quick tips for the wedding:
  • Only use high-quality cells like Panasonic Eneloop Pro AA Batteries. Standard alkalines are way too slow for event work.
  • Look for a used Godox TT685C Flash for Canon to stay under that $100 mark while still getting full power. Reliability is king at a wedding, so dont compromise on the output power tho.

Unfortunately, that T7 hot shoe design was a massive step backward for Canon. I remember trying to help a friend shoot a similar low-light event with one of those generic Neewer TT560 Speedlite units and it was a total disaster... literally wouldnt fire because of that missing center pin. It is honestly a shame how confusing they made it for beginners. I spent hours trying to DIY a workaround with old triggers back in the day but it just wasnt reliable enough for a wedding environment. If you are on a tight budget, I have had decent luck with the Yongnuo YN568EX III for Canon. It is usually under $90 and it actually talks to the T7 properly via the TTL pins since they updated the firmware specifically for this. Another solid option if you can find a deal is the Flashpoint Zoom TTL R2 Flash for Canon. It is basically a rebadged Godox but sometimes the pricing is better for us folks on a budget. Just dont trust the universal manual ones you see on Amazon for 30 bucks, they will leave you hanging right when the vows start and you will be stuck with dark, grainy shots.

Man I wish I found this thread sooner. Would have saved me so much hassle.
