I just picked up a Canon EOS R5 and I'm a bit overwhelmed by the storage needs for 4K and 8K video. Since CFexpress is so pricey, I need reliable V90 SD cards for the second slot. Are there specific brands that handle the high bitrates without overheating or dropping frames? What’s your go-to card for reliable video?
Respectfully, I'd actually suggest a different approach. tbh even V90s can choke on 8K RAW, so I use the SD slot for 4K backup instead. I love these: - Kingston Canvas React Plus 256GB SDXC UHS-II V90 — literally the best value for money!!
- SanDisk 128GB Extreme PRO UHS-II SDXC V90 — super reliable. Both are wayyy cheaper than ProGrade and honestly work fantastic for me. hope that helps u out!
In my experience, ProGrade Digital 128GB SDXC UHS-II V90 Cobalt handles 4K fine. I'm still kinda cautious about 8K bitrates tho... so make sure ur card is actually V90 rated!!
tbh I spent way too much time looking into this before I bought my R5 because I was terrified of a card failing during a shoot. From all the market research I did, the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II seems to be the most recommended if youre worried about build quality. They dont have those tiny plastic ribs or the lock switch that always seem to break off on cheaper cards. It gives me a bit more peace of mind even though they cost a lot more?? I also saw some people comparing them to the Lexar Professional 2000x SDXC UHS-II. The Lexar usually benchmarks pretty high for speed, but I read some mixed stuff about their recent quality control compared to Sony. Since I'm still kind of a beginner at this, I basically chose to pay the 'safety tax' for the Sony ones. Has anyone actually had a Lexar card fail on them while shooting 4K 120fps? Im still trying to figure out if the extra price is actually worth it for the reliability!!!
Nice, didn't know that
Can confirm this works. Did the same thing on mine and its been solid ever since.
Saved for later, ty!
