What are the must-have accessories for a new Canon R5 owner?

I finally pulled the trigger and picked up a Canon R5! I'm moving over from a DSLR, so I'm a bit overwhelmed by the mirrorless ecosystem. I know I need fast storage for those high-bitrate files, but CFexpress Type B cards are quite an investment—are there specific brands you trust? Also, I'm wondering if the EF-EOS R adapter is enough for my old glass, or if I should prioritize native RF lenses right away. Lastly, the battery life seems a bit shorter than what I'm used to, so are extra LP-E6NH batteries or a grip essential? I’d love to hear your 'day one' must-haves for this camera. What are the first few accessories you’d recommend?

Yo, late to the party but congrats on the R5! It’s such a beastly camera but definitely a bit of a shock to the system if you're coming from a DSLR. Before I give my full advice, curious about one thing: what's your primary subject matter? Like, are you shooting 8K video or just high-speed burst for sports? That really dictates how much you actually need to spend on media. In my experience, you’ve basically got two paths for storage. I’ve compared the ProGrade Digital 512GB CFexpress Type B Gold vs the Delkin Devices 512GB Black CFexpress Type B. The ProGrade is a solid value for most stills, but the Delkin Black has way better sustained write speeds for the heavy-duty RAW video files. Also, regarding the power... since you mentioned the batteries already, I'd look at the Canon BG-R10 Battery Grip. I've tried many setups over the years and the grip is great for balance if you're using heavy EF glass, tho it makes the rig massive compared to just carrying extra cells. Anyway, let me know what you're shooting! Cheers.

Ok so, congrats on the R5! I've been shooting with mine for a couple years now and ngl, the 'mirrorless tax' is real lol. For storage, dont waste money on the super high-end cards unless ur doing 8K RAW all day. I use the Angelbird AV PRO CFexpress B 512GB card. It's usually around $160-$180 and basically just works. Here's my budget-friendly list:
- Stick with the Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. Your EF glass actually performs better on mirrorless, seriously.
- Skip the grip for now. Just grab a spare Canon Battery Pack LP-E6NH ($79) or even an older Canon LP-E6N if u want to save more. Honestly, the adapter is the best value 'accessory' out there. Don't feel pressured to buy RF glass immediately, I still use my old EF lenses daily and they're sharp as ever. gl! 👍

Congrats on the R5! I was in your shoes a few months ago and totally get the sticker shock. Ngl, the battery life was my biggest gripe at first. Instead of the official grip, I actually started carrying an Anker 737 Power Bank PowerCore 24K. Since the R5 supports PD charging, I can just top it up via USB-C during lunch breaks or while driving. Its way more versatile than a grip imo. For cards, I went with the Lexar Professional CFexpress Type B Silver Series 512GB. Its much cheaper than the Gold series or Delkin stuff and has handled everything Ive thrown at it, including some 4K high-speed clips. Id also say stick with your EF glass for now. The adapter works perfectly. If you really want a native lens to try out, the Canon RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM is a fantastic all-day lens that doesnt cost a fortune. Its tiny, has IS, and the close-focusing is super handy. Enjoy the new rig!
