I just pulled the trigger on a Canon R5! It’s a beast, but I’m realizing I need the right gear to handle the high-res stills and video. I’m specifically looking for CFexpress Type B card recommendations and reliable extra batteries. Beyond those, what are the absolute essentials you’d suggest for a new setup?

oh man, congrats! In my experience, you dont need to overspend. Here's what I recommend: first, the Angelbird 512GB AV PRO CFexpress Type B SE is usually under $150 and sooo fast. Second, for power, try the Wasabi Power Battery 2-Pack for LP-E6NH. Over the years, Ive learned a screen protector is basically essential too. Do you shoot 8K?? anyway... gl!

Honestly, congrats on the R5! It's an amazing piece of kit, but from my experience, u really need to prioritize reliability over saving a few bucks. It’s easy to focus on the big items, but the small stuff can really ruin a shoot if it fails or causes the body to glitch out. A few things I’d be super careful about: * Cheap CFexpress readers: Seriously, don't skimp here. I've heard horror stories about budget readers overheating and actually frying expensive cards during long transfers. Look for something with a solid heat sink.
* PD Power Banks: If you want to charge via USB-C, the power source basically has to be PD-rated (Power Delivery) with high enough wattage or it won't even register. Most generic phone bricks just won't cut it.
* Sensor cleaning: With that high-res sensor, dust shows up like crazy. Get a proper kit, but honestly, be careful about touching the sensor urself if u aren't 100% sure what ur doing. So basically, just watch the heat during long bursts or video sessions. The R5 is a beast, but it’s still basically a high-end computer at the end of the day and can be finicky. Anyway, good luck with the new setup!

Just sharing my experience: battery voltage affects burst speed, so use Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery. For heat, ProGrade Digital 160GB CFexpress Type B Cobalt is basically the only card I trust. good luck!

The R5 is such a fantastic choice! You are going to absolutely love the autofocus performance. It really is a beast of a camera. Quick question before I give my full list... are you planning on shooting more 8K RAW video or are you sticking mostly to high-res wildlife or sports photography? The buffer needs change quite a bit depending on your workflow. Like someone mentioned, the media reliability is everything. While ProGrade is great, I have had amazing luck with a couple of other brands that are worth comparing:

  • StarGazer is 100% right about the small stuff failing when you least expect it. I once cheaped out on a basic strap and almost watched my whole setup dive onto concrete... legit heart attack territory. If youre doing high-res stills, you gotta think about that second card slot too. I have been using the Sony TOUGH-G series SDXC UHS-II 128GB V90 and it is basically indestructible. Having that reliability for backup is huge when youre shooting weddings or once-in-a-lifetime trips. It pairs perfectly with the CFexpress card for redundancy. Also, get a Giottos Rocket Air Blaster Large immediately! With the R5 sensor, every tiny speck of dust shows up in those 45MP files and it is a total pain to edit out later. Lastly, I am obsessed with my Peak Design Slide Camera Strap. The stock Canon ones are kinda trash for long days, but this one makes the weight disappear. Honestly makes the whole shooting experience way more fun and way more secure.

My buddy told me the exact same thing last week. Guess he was right lol.
