I just got this Canon R6 thing and honestly im so overwhelmed by all the buttons. I spent way too much money on this for a trip to Yellowstone next week and now the battery died after just taking a few photos of my cat. I looked online for extras but the official ones are like eighty bucks which is insane after what I already paid. I keep seeing these off-brand ones from companies I never heard of but im terrified theyll catch fire or something and break my new camera. Sorry if this is a stupid question i just have no clue what im doing or what brands are safe to buy. What batteries and chargers do you guys actually use for this model?

Ngl, I have had some pretty disappointing experiences trying to save money here. I bought some cheapos and they couldnt even handle the high-speed burst mode on my R6, which basically defeats the purpose of the camera. If you want to avoid that $80 Canon tax, SmallRig LP-E6NH USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery is probably the most reliable choice I have found. They have a USB-C port right on the battery so you dont even need a separate charger. Super handy for travel. I also tried the Neewer LP-E6NH 2250mAh Replacement Battery set, but honestly, the battery life display is jumpy. Itll say 40% then just die two minutes later... frustrating when youre out in the woods. For Yellowstone, I would really suggest grabbing at least one official Canon LP-E6NH Lithium-Ion Battery because third-party ones struggle when the temperature drops. Losing a shot of a grizzly because your battery tanked is the absolute worst.

I totally get the sticker shock! When I started out, I spent everything on the body and had zero for extras. I did some voltage testing and these 2250mAh cells are amazing for the price!!

Late to the party but thought Id chime in since I went through the same panic before a big trip last year. Yellowstone is gonna be killer, but yeah, the R6 is a thirsty camera because that electronic viewfinder stays on constantly. I remember being so annoyed that my old batteries didnt last half as long. Basically, the R6 needs the LP-E6NH specifically to hit those high-speed burst modes. If you use older versions or cheap clones, the little green icon for high speed might turn white or gray, meaning your camera slows down. Here is what I found works well without breaking the bank:

  • SmallRig LP-E6NH USB-C Rechargeable Camera Battery 2400mAh is what I use now. These are cool because they have a USB-C port directly on the battery. No separate charger needed if youre traveling light.
  • Watson LP-E6NH Li-Ion Battery Pack 7.2V 2250mAh is usually my go-to for reliability. Theyre a bit more expensive than the rock-bottom brands but they have better safety circuits.
  • Look for batteries labeled as fully decoded. It just means the camera can actually read the remaining percentage correctly so it doesnt just die without warning. Honestly, having at least three batteries total is the sweet spot for a full day of shooting. Just make sure you get a charger that can plug into a car outlet or a power bank since youll be driving a lot between spots out there. Youre gonna have a blast, just dont overthink the settings too much yet!
