I finally picked up the Canon R10 for our Tokyo trip next month and I am so stoked to start filming! Its my first real camera so I really want the audio to not suck. Ive been looking around online and saw a lot of people hype up the Rode VideoMic GO II and also the Deity V-Mic D4 but im kinda stuck. Some reviews say the R10 preamps can be a bit noisy and i read somewhere that the Deity might have better gain control for that but then someone else said the Rode is better for beginners. My budget is like $170 max and I just need something reliable for outdoor vlogging. Which one of these actually works better with the R10s internals?

> Be careful with the internal preamps tho, they can hiss if you leave them on auto. Make sure to: Set levels to manual Coming back to this, I totally agree. I spent weeks testing my R10 in noisy environments before a trip to Kyoto last year, and honestly, the preamps are the weakest link. If you want to bypass that hiss, you might want to consider the Deity V-Mic D4 S3.5mm Supercardioid Shotgun Microphone. The reason is basically technical: it has an onboard gain knob that lets you boost the signal before it reaches the camera. A hotter signal means you can drop that camera gain even lower, which is crucial for a clean signal-to-noise ratio. Also, vlogging in Tokyo means constant wind from the subways and open streets. I would suggest looking at the <a href=" https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt= Sennheiser+MKE+400+Compact+Shotgun+Microphone&BI=8941&KBID=10361&SID=2222&DFF=d50" target="_blank" rel="nofollow sponsored">Sennheiser MKE 400 Compact Shotgun Microphone too. It has a built-in gain switch (+20dB) and an internal low-cut filter. Just make sure to set the R10 to its lowest possible manual level when using the mics boost. It makes a massive difference, trust me. Let me know if you want to know more about the specific sensitivity ratings!

Coming back to this, I spent years trying different setups before finding what clicked. When I was in Osaka, the wind was brutal but a wireless setup saved my audio. Wireless usually handles gain better than the R10s noisy preamps so you wont get that hiss.

Congrats on the R10! Ive shot with it a ton and you might want to consider the Rode VideoMic GO II Ultra-compact Shotgun Microphone. Be careful with the internal preamps tho, they can hiss if you leave them on auto. Make sure to:

  • Set levels to manual
  • Keep gain around 15% The Rode is much simpler for beginners, ngl. Just ask if you hit any snags during setup!
