So I just got my hands on a Canon R3 and honestly I think I am way in over my head here. It was a graduation gift and I really want to start making high quality videos for a travel vlog I want to start next month but opening the box was super intimidating. There are so many buttons and dials and I basically just know how to turn it on right now. I live in a really rural area so there arent any camera shops nearby where I can just go and ask someone to show me the ropes or tell me what to buy. I have about $900 saved up to spend on the extra stuff I need to actually make it work well for video but I dont even know what is actually essential for this specific model. Like do I need a special mic or is the one on top good enough for talking? And what about the memory cards because I saw some that are like $400 which seems crazy but maybe necessary? I really dont want to waste money on things that are too professional or complicated for a beginner like me but I want my videos to look and sound decent.

- maybe a tripod?
I am really confused about the whole setup process so sorry if this is a really basic thing to ask but what are the absolute must-have accessories I should buy first for video on the R3?

Jumping in here about an hour later... honestly I was in the same boat when I first got my R3. Felt like I was driving a Ferrari when I barely had my learners permit lol. Since someone already mentioned the fast cards, I gotta talk about power and stability. I am super satisfied with having a Canon LP-E19 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery as a backup because shooting high-res video eats through juice way faster than youd think. One thing that really helped me feel less intimidated was getting a cage like the SmallRig Black Mamba Cage for EOS R3. It adds some protection and basically gives you spots to screw in your mic or a light later on. If you're doing travel vlogs, a solid tripod is huge. Ive been using the Manfrotto Befree Advanced Travel Tripod and it works well for hiking since it is pretty light. Its definitely a learning curve but stick with it, you're gonna love the footage once you get the hang of it...

I have been thinking about your vlog all afternoon! The R3 is truly an amazing machine! Quick question though, are you filming mostly in bright daylight or indoors? To keep footage smooth, you definitely need a Variable ND filter for safety.
- Tiffen 77mm Variable ND Filter is fantastic and reliable for the price.
- PolarPro Signature Edition II Variable ND 2-5 Stop is amazing but much more expensive. I always prioritize reliability when choosing gear!

In my experience, the R3 is a beast but you gotta feed it fast storage first. Here are the two things I've found essential over the years:
- SanDisk Extreme PRO 256GB CFexpress Type B because cheap cards will just fail during high-quality 4K recording.
- Rode VideoMic Pro+ because internal audio is basically unusable for professional vlogs. Those two will make the biggest difference right away.
