What is the absolute best battery grip for the Canon 90D that isnt gonna cost me an arm and a leg like the official one? I have been using my 90D for a little over a year now mostly for birding and wildlife shots out here in Oregon and carrying it around with a heavy Sigma 150-600mm lens is starting to cramp my hand up pretty bad. Plus my batteries keep dying right when the light gets good.
I am planning a big trip out to the Rockies next month so I really need to get this sorted before then. I did some looking around and obviously the Canon BG-E14 is the proper choice but I just cant justify spending $200 on a piece of plastic when I still need to buy more SD cards and maybe a better bag. I saw the Neewer grip on Amazon for like $50 and it has okay reviews but then I saw a few people saying the buttons feel mushy or that it actually drained their batteries while the camera was sitting in the bag. That sounds like a total nightmare if Im hiking for miles and find out my gear is dead.
Then there is the Vello grip which is more like $80 or $90 but is it actually any better than the cheap ones? Some forum posts say the weather sealing on third party grips is basically non existent and since I live in a rainy climate that kinda worries me. I want something that feels solid and wont flex when I have that huge Sigma lens mounted on a tripod.
Is the build quality of the Pixel or Vello brands worth the extra cash over the super cheap Neewer stuff or should I just try to find a used Canon brand grip on eBay? I really want to stay under a $100 budget if I can but I also dont want to risk my camera body getting short circuited by a cheap knockoff. Has anyone here used a specific brand for a long time without the shutter button failing or the rubber peeling off...
Agreed! If used fails, definitely try Vello BG-C10 Battery Grip for Canon 70D 80D 90D. Fantastic specs!
Honestly, I think searching for a used official grip is the way to go. In my experience, third-party stuff is okay, but Im not sure if they can handle Oregon rain. Someone told me the cheaper ones have bad seals. Ive tried many over the years and the official gear just feels way more solid when youre using heavy lenses like that...
