Recommended third-party EF to RF adapters for Canon mirrorless cameras?

I just picked up a Canon R6 and I'm loving the mirrorless life, but I've got a closet full of older EF glass that I'm not ready to sell yet. The official Canon adapter is a bit pricey for what it is, so I'm looking at third-party options to save some cash for a new RF prime instead.

I've seen brands like Viltrox and Meike mentioned online, but I'm worried about a few things:

  • Autofocus tracking speed for moving subjects
  • Build quality and potential light leaks
  • Overall stability with heavier L-series lenses

Does anyone here have long-term experience using these cheaper alternatives? I'd love to know which specific brand you would actually trust for daily use.

Stumbled on this while looking through my gear. I actually went the super budget route with the Commlite CM-EF-EOS R Auto-Focus Mount Adapter and it has been solid. The specs show gold-plated contact pins and aluminum alloy construction, which handles my heavy L-series glass without flexing. Since it is basically just a hollow tube with wiring, I couldnt justify the Canon tax. Saved nearly eighty bucks for my RF prime fund.

Jumping in here to agree, third party is totally the way to go if you want to save some cash. Technically, since these are just spacers with pass-through pins, you arent losing image quality because there is no glass involved. I personally use the Meike MK-EFTR-A Auto-Focus Mount Adapter and it has been solid. The build is basically all metal and it handles my heavier glass like the 70-200mm without any flexing. Another one to check out is the Commlite CM-EF-EOS R Mount Adapter. It actually has pretty decent internal flocking to prevent light bounces inside the barrel, which is a common issue with super cheap ones. AF tracking feels native because the R6 handles most of the heavy lifting anyway. Just keep an eye on the mounting plate screws, sometimes they need a tiny tighten after a few months of heavy use, but otherwise, they are a steal compared to the Canon tax.

I've been using my R6 with a few third-party adapters for about a year now. Honestly, the Viltrox EF-R2 Control Ring Mount Adapter is my go-to choice. Its super solid and I havent noticed any lag with my L-series glass. AF speed feels basically identical to native. If you want something simple, the Meike MK-EFTR-A Auto-Focus Mount Adapter is even cheaper and works just as well.
