Hey everyone! I finally took the plunge and upgraded to a Canon R6 Mark II after shooting on my trusty 5D Mark III for nearly a decade. I’m absolutely loving the autofocus and the eye-tracking on this thing—it’s a total game-changer! However, after dropping a significant chunk of my savings on the camera body, I’m feeling the sting of the 'RF tax' when it comes to accessories.
I have a pretty solid collection of EF glass that I’m not ready to part with yet, including my 50mm f/1.8, an old 24-105mm L-series, and a Sigma 150-600mm for wildlife. I looked into the official Canon EF-EOS R mount adapter, but it’s consistently priced over $100, which feels a bit steep for what is essentially a hollow metal tube with some pins. I’ve been browsing Amazon and B&H, and I’m seeing a ton of third-party options from brands like Viltrox, Meike, and Commlite for literally half the price.
My main concern is reliability. I’ve heard some horror stories about third-party adapters having a bit of 'play' or wobbling when attached, which makes me nervous about the weather sealing and the physical security of my heavier lenses. Also, how is the autofocus performance? I’d hate to lose that snappy R6 speed because of a cheap communication bridge between the lens and the body. I also noticed that some budget models offer a 'control ring' like the high-end Canon version, but I’m wondering if those cheaper rings actually feel tactile or just like cheap plastic.
Has anyone here had long-term success with a specific budget-friendly brand? I’m trying to keep this under $50-$60 if possible so I can put that saved money toward an actual RF prime lens later this year. Should I trust my gear to a $45 Viltrox, or is this one of those situations where 'buying cheap means buying twice'? I’d love to hear your recommendations on which specific models have the best build quality and smoothest AF performance!
yo, i feel u on the RF tax. Curious about one thing: is ur Sigma the Sport or Contemporary version? Before I give advice, that lens weight makes me kinda nervous on a cheap mount... - Viltrox EF-R2 Control Ring Mount Adapter: Ring is handy but feels plastic-y.
- Meike MK-EFTR-A Auto Focus Mount Adapter: Cheapest option, but might have more "play." Basically, I’d suggest being careful with heavy glass on a $50 tube, you know?
Basically, since EF and RF share the same electronic protocol, these adapters are just pass-through pins with no logic board translation needed. Definately check out the compatibility charts on the B&H Photo specs pages for technical details. I’ve been using the Commlite CM-EF-EOS R Mount Adapter (usually $45) and its been rock solid for me. It realy handles the signal timing perfectly, so you wont lose that R6 AF speed. Plus, the metal mount is surprisingly beefy!
In my experience, I was terrified of my heavy Sigma falling off, but my Viltrox has been rock solid. AF is perfect. Honestly, just save ur cash for that RF prime!
I have been doing a lot of reading on this because I am also new to the system, but I have to politely disagree with just grabbing the absolute cheapest one you can find. When you look at the technical specs for the mount tolerances, some of the bottom-tier brands have tiny variations in the flange distance. That could potentially mess with your focus at infinity, I think? I spent way too many hours looking at market comparisons and I think these two are better middle-ground options:
Omg I am literally in the same position right now!! I just picked up the R6 Mark II as well and staring at those RF lens prices makes my head spin. It is so frustrating having amazing EF glass just sitting there while you are basically broke from the body upgrade lol. I am super paranoid about the play in the mount too because my heavier glass is a huge investment and I am terrified of it wobbling or snapping off!! I am curious though, are you planning on using a tripod collar for that Sigma 150-600mm most of the time, or are you gonna be shooting handheld? And honestly, are you more worried about the physical build quality of these third party brands compared to the Canon one, or is the weather sealing your absolute top priority for your wildlife shoots?
