Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to the Canon RF system with an EOS R6 Mark II, and while the camera itself is a total powerhouse, I’ve quickly realized that my old gear isn't quite cutting it anymore—specifically my SD cards. I’ve been using some older UHS-I cards from my DSLR days, and they are seriously bottlenecking the performance.
Yesterday, I was out trying to capture some high-speed action at a local track meet, and after a few long bursts using the electronic shutter, the camera just froze up with the 'busy' light blinking for what felt like forever. It’s pretty frustrating to miss a key moment because the buffer is taking its sweet time to clear. I’m also starting to experiment more with 4K 60p video, and I’m terrified of getting that 'recording interrupted' message right in the middle of a shoot.
I’ve been doing some research, and I know I need to move up to UHS-II cards to take full advantage of the RF mount's capabilities, but the options are honestly a bit overwhelming. I see V60 cards that seem reasonably priced, but then the V90 cards are nearly double the cost for the same capacity. I’m trying to figure out if the extra speed of a V90 card is actually noticeable for day-to-day shooting, or if a high-quality V60 card like the Sony M-Series or ProGrade Gold would be 'enough' for wildlife and occasional event work.
Reliability is a huge factor for me too, as I’ve had a card fail on me once before and it was a nightmare. I’ve heard good things about the SanDisk Extreme Pro and the Sony Tough series, but I’d love to hear some real-world feedback from people actually using these in their R5, R6, or R7 bodies.
What are the best high-speed SD cards you’ve used for your Canon RF mirrorless cameras, and do you think it’s worth springing for the V90 rating, or is V60 the better value for most users?
Here's what I recommend: honestly V90 is amazing for clearing buffers, and you can actually find them cheap. Check these out: * Kingston Canvas React Plus 128GB SDXC UHS-II V90 * Lexar Professional 1800x 128GB SDXC UHS-II V60 Its way cheaper than Sony but handles R6II 4K60p (~230Mbps) and bursts perfectly!! Unless youre shooting pro sports all day, these are basically the best value youll find. good luck!! 👍
In my experience, I would suggest the ProGrade Digital 128GB SDXC UHS-II Video Speed Class 60 (V60) Gold for around $55. V90 is lowkey overkill for the R6II; i’ve used these V60s for wildlife and they handle 4K 60p and bursts just fine for honestlly half the price. be careful with the V90 hype... unless you’re shooting heavy All-I video, save your cash for glass! 👍
So, I’ve been thinking about your reliability concerns, and honestly, that’s where my head is always at when I’m out shooting. If you've already dealt with a card failure, you know it’s just not worth the risk to go cheap. For my R6 Mark II, I've moved almost exclusively to the Sony TOUGH M-Series UHS-II SD Card. What makes them different isn't just the V60 speed, but the physical build—they don't have those flimsy plastic ribs or the write-protect switch that always seems to break off at the worst time. They’re basically one solid piece of resin, which is a huge peace of mind for event work. Now, if you’re really pushing those 40fps electronic shutter bursts at track meets, the SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-II SDXC V90 is probably the safest bet for maximum performance. The V90 rating definitely helps clear the buffer faster so you aren't staring at a 'busy' light while the next race starts. I’ve found that SanDisk’s controllers handle the heat from long 4K 60p sessions much better than some of the budget brands. Basically, paying for the build quality is just as important as the speed rating.
