honestly fed up with my current setup. I bought this cheap Manfrotto Element thinking it would be fine but its so clunky and the legs keep sticking when I am trying to catch the light. I am taking my R8 to the Dolomites next month and I need something that actually fits in a standard backpack side pocket without hitting me in the head every time I turn around. My logic was to go cheap but now I realize I need quality.
I looked at the Peak Design one but its just way too expensive for what it is. Is there a middle ground that doesnt suck?
Stoked for your trip! Quick question, are you using a battery grip? The Vanguard VEO 3GO 235CB Carbon Fiber is awesome because the twist locks are super fast so you won't miss any light!
Honestly been there. Buying cheap tripods is just a down payment on the one you actually want later. I have tried many of these travel setups over the years and most are total junk that vibrate the second the wind picks up. For an R8 in the Dolomites, you want something that isnt gonna give you a headache.
This thing is basically a tank. Its under your 3 lb limit and usually sits around $200. The best part is there is no center column. That might sound like a downside but it means the legs fold much flatter. It actually fits into side pockets on a backpack without bulging out like a sore thumb. Super solid in my experience.
If you like the look of the Peak Design but hate the price tag, this is the way to go. Its carbon fiber, super slim, and has a built-in ball head that works perfectly for an R8. Its roughly $220. Tbh the build quality is surprisingly good for the price.
Extremely light, like under 2 lbs. Its very compact but the legs are a bit thinner. If you are doing long exposures in high wind it might struggle, but for general hiking it disappears in your bag. In my experience, go with the Leofoto if you want something thatll last a decade. The Ulanzi is better if you really prioritize that slim PD-style form factor for your pack side pocket.
^ This. Also, I've spent years obsessed with leg deflection and torsional rigidity specs. Hauling a bulky aluminum setup through the Swiss Alps years ago was a massive mistake... never again. I eventually switched to the Leofoto LX-225CT Carbon Fiber Tripod with EB-36 Ball Head for mountain hikes. Its under 3 lbs but handles 13 lbs easily. Way stiffer than the Element, kind of the perfect middle ground for an R8 setup.
