Hey! New to flash photography with my R7. Any recommendations for a good flash? Budget's around $300. What do you guys suggest?

Coming back to this... mostly because I've been so satisfied with my current setup and how it just works without any drama. > Budget is around $300. What do you guys suggest? Before jumping into specs, what are you actually planning to take photos of? Like, are you doing family stuff, macro, or maybe events? That totally changes what kind of weight and recycle speed you'll actually care about. I remember when I first got my R7, I was super worried about the new shoe design because I'd heard stories about pins bending. I went with a setup that felt solid and it's been totally reliable for me. I’ve been out in light rain and done several long portrait sessions where I never had a single misfire or connection issue. Honestly, having gear that I dont have to fiddle with makes the whole experience way more fun. Once you know your subject matter, it's easier to find something that wont let you down when you're in the middle of a shoot...

Honestly, when I moved to the R series, my main concern was the new multi-function shoe interface. It's realy different from the old DSLR mounts and feels much more delicate. I've had a few learning moments regarding gear safety and reliability while trying to find what works for me: * Pin alignment: The tiny pins on the shoe are easy to bend if the mounting foot isn't perfectly machined.
* Weather sealing: I noticed some setups dont seal as well as others, which can be risky for the R7's weather-resistant body if you're out in the elements.
* Communication errors: I've dealt with weird misfires or TTL timing issues when the digital handshake between the body and the unit isn't 100% stable. I eventually settled on a setup that prioritizes that electronic handshake stability above all else. Reliability is basically everything when you're shooting high-speed sync or relying on the E-TTL II metering. I've found that some mounting feet can realy cause more stress than their worth if they aren't built to the exact specs of the newer shoe. Just my experience with the transition tho.

Hey! Speaking from experience, I'd advise caution with aftermarket flashes on the R7. Over the years, I've found Canon's own Speedlites incredibly reliable and worth the investment. While it stretches your budget, a used Speedlite 430EX III-RT might be a safer bet. Consider consulting a Canon-certified technician to confirm compatibility *before* purchasing anything. Prevents potential damage! Good luck!

Consider Godox TT685 II. External power pack might be crucial for R7's burst shooting; recycle times matter!
