What are the best lenses for the Canon EOS R50? I'm looking for recommendations that cover a range of photography styles, including portraits, landscapes, and wildlife. I've heard about the RF-S 18-150mm as a versatile option, but I'm curious if there are other lenses that might be better suited for specific types of photography. Additionally, are there any compact or lightweight options that would pair well with the R50 for travel? Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

For the Canon EOS R50, several standout lenses cover different photography needs:

Versatile Zoom Lenses:

  • RF-S 18-150mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM: Perfect all-rounder for travel, landscapes, and portraits
  • RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM: Professional-grade with constant aperture, ideal for various scenarios

Prime Lenses:

  • RF 50mm f/1.8 STM: Compact "nifty fifty" for portraits and low-light shooting
  • RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM: Versatile lens combining macro capabilities with everyday focal length

Specialty Lenses:

  • RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM: Wide-angle lens for landscapes and architecture
  • RF 100-400mm f/5.6-8 IS USM: Telephoto zoom for wildlife and sports photography

Choose based on your primary photography style: The 18-150mm serves well as a single do-it-all lens, the 50mm f/1.8 excels in portraits and low light, while the 10-18mm and 100-400mm cover specialized needs in landscape and wildlife photography respectively.

Just saw this thread and honestly I'm so excited for you! The R50 is such an amazing little camera and it's so fun to use! I'm a bit of a safety-first person when it comes to gear tho, so I usually lean towards Canon's own glass to avoid any weird autofocus bugs or firmware glitches down the road... sticking with native just feels way more reliable to me! Before you pull the trigger, could you clarify a couple things?

  • What's your total budget for these lenses?
  • Are you mostly wanting more zoom range or that super blurry background look? Definitely check out the comparison tool on RTINGS or even The Digital Picture! They have these crazy detailed charts that show exactly how different brands perform against each other. It's basically my bible whenever I'm worried about spending money on something that might not be 100% reliable!

Get Sigma RF-S mount lenses. Much better than Canon RF-S.

For the R50, I'd strongly recommend starting with the RF 50mm f/1.8 STM. It's affordable (~$200), compact, and gives you excellent image quality for portraits and everyday shooting. If you want a zoom, the RF-S 18-45mm kit lens is surprisingly good for the price.

I switched from an old Rebel to the R50 and couldn't be happier. For lenses, it depends on your budget and what you shoot. The RF-S 18-45mm kit lens is fine to start, but I quickly added the RF 35mm f/1.8 Macro IS STM (~$500) and it's barely left my camera since. Perfect focal length for everyday shots on the R50's crop sensor, fantastic for food photography, and the IS works brilliantly with the R50's lack of IBIS. If you can swing it, this lens is worth every penny!
