So I finally bit the bullet and got the R5 Mark II after saving for literally a year and im honestly so hyped to use it but my current lens setup is just driving me insane and ruining the vibe. Im still using my old EF 16-35mm f/2.8 II with the adapter and its just... not it anymore. Like my logic was that the glass would still be fine but the corners are so soft on this high res sensor that it feels like I wasted my money on the body if I cant get sharp shots. I spent a fortune on this kit so im kinda broke but I have about $2300 left for a dedicated landscape lens before I head out to Olympic National Park in three weeks.

Im frustrated because I keep seeing everyone say get the RF 15-35mm but then I see people talking about the 14-35mm f4 being sharper for landscape since you stop down anyway? Or should I just go for a prime like the 24mm? My brain is spinning honestly because I want that crisp detail for the misty forest shots and the 45 megapixels are just exposing every tiny flaw in my old EF glass. I was looking at these:

  • RF 15-35mm f2.8
  • RF 14-35mm f4
  • Maybe a set of primes?

I need something that wont make me regret switching to mirrorless because right now the weight of the adapter and the soft edges are just making me want to scream lol. Does anyone actually have the R5II and have you found the perfect lens that doesnt turn the edges into mush? I just want to be done with this setup frustration before my trip...

In my experience, the R5II sensor really exposes internal reflections and diffraction in those older designs. You should look at the Canon RF 24-70mm f/2.8L IS USM as your primary landscape tool. Standard zooms usually have much better edge-to-edge consistency than ultra-wides tbh. Since you have $2300, you can easily grab one used and finally ditch that adapter. Its way more versatile for forest shots anyway...

Unfortunately, that old EF glass simply cannot keep up with the R5II sensor. I had issues with the Canon RF 15-35mm f/2.8L IS USM as its heavy and the edge rendering was not as good as expected for the high cost. I suggest the Canon RF 14-35mm f/4L IS USM instead. Its lighter and significantly sharper across the entire frame for landscapes when youre stopped down.
