My family is driving me crazy already and it isnt even December yet. We always have this massive issue where three different aunts buy the same Lego set for my nephew and it turns into a whole thing at my moms house in Columbus. I need to get a registry or some kind of list system set up like, yesterday, because if I dont have this ready by our Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday everyone is just gonna start panic buying random stuff and we will end up with ten copies of the same book.
I have been looking at a few options but I am getting really anxious about picking the wrong one because half my family is super tech-savvy and the other half still struggles with basic email. I need something that is 100% free because I am already stretching my budget thin this year with the cost of travel and everything so I definitely cant pay for a subscription just to share a list.
Here is what I am looking for:
- Must be free to use for everyone involved
- Easy to add items from any website (not just one specific store)
- Needs to show if someone already bought the item so we dont get duplicates
- Mobile app or at least a very good mobile site since my cousins do everything on their phones
- Simple enough for my 70 year old dad to navigate without calling me every five minutes
I am currently torn between Elfster and Giftster. Elfster seems like the big name and I know they do the Secret Santa stuff but can you use it just as a regular year-round list? I am worried it might be too cluttered with ads or weird social features we dont need. Then there is Giftster which looks a bit more basic but maybe that is better for my parents who get frustrated with complicated apps? I also thought about just doing an Amazon list but some people want stuff from Etsy or smaller local shops and I dont know if Amazon handles external links well anymore without it being a huge pain.
Does anyone have experience with these or maybe something else I am missing? I really need to decide tonight so I can send the links out before everyone starts their Black Friday shopping and the chaos truly begins...

I totally feel your pain about the duplicate gifts, it happens every single year in my family too until we finally got organized! It makes everything so much easier and I love how secure it feels. Seriously, you should definitely check out Giftster for your situation!! I’ve used it with my parents who are in their late 60s and they actually figured it out without calling me once! It is way less cluttered than Elfster and feels much more private which I really appreciate. You can add stuff from literally any shop, like Etsy or small boutiques, just by pasting the link. It’s totally free and the mobile site works like a charm for my siblings who are always on their phones. The best part is definitely the claim feature. Once someone buys it, it marks it as taken so no one else sees it as available, but the person who made the list cant see who bought what. No more triple Legos!! Honestly just jump in and try it, you’ll feel so much better once it’s set up before the Black Friday madness starts! It’s such a relief to have everything in one spot and not worry about people wasting money on stuff you already have. Go for it, it is going to be amazing!
