Looking for the best flash for my EOS R6. Shooting mostly portraits. Budget is around $500. What's the best option in that range?

Building on the earlier suggestion, I honestly feel a bit disappointed seeing so much focus on budget third-party options. Unfortunately, I have had issues with non-native units in the past where the communication with the R6 hot shoe was just not as good as expected. When you are doing portraits, you need that consistency. I really think performance should be the priority:

  • Native brand integration is much safer for the electronics
  • Recycle times are more consistent on high-end OEM units
  • The build quality actually lasts through years of use Just go with Canon, you cant go wrong. Staying within the official ecosystem is the only way to ensure you dont have weird TTL glitches in the middle of a shoot. It might cost more upfront but it is worth it to avoid the headaches I have dealt with...

Exactly what I was thinking

Been shooting portraits with EOS cameras for years. In my experience, for reliable results under $500, consider the Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT. It's not the flashiest, but it's dependable. Pro tip: always test flash recycle times and power output *before* a paid shoot to avoid blown highlights. Trust me, learned that the hard way back in '08!

Consider Godox V860III-C. Full TTL, 2.4G wireless, recycle time is decent, and it works.

Don't overspend! For portraits, a used Canon Speedlite 430EX II (~$150) is plenty capable. Invest the savings in good light modifiers; they make a bigger difference.

Hey! Speedlite 430EX III-RT's great, but remember cheap flashes can fry your R6's hot shoe! $300 insurance is cheaper than a camera repair! Be safe!

Hey! For portrait flashes around $500, it's tricky! Godox seems to be eating everyone's lunch lately, based on online reviews. But seriously, check YouTube comparisons – it feels like they're dominating the market share in that price range. Are you seeing the same thing?

Before dropping $500, have you considered 'DIY' lighting? Reflectors and diffusers are amazing for portraits and WAY cheaper! Seriously, experiment before committing. If you *still* need a flash, Godox TT685 is solid. But lighting is HUGE – proper setup might negate the flash need entirely! Be safe, maybe watch some tutorials first!
