Hey everyone! I’ve recently made the full transition from my old DSLR setup to the Canon mirrorless world with an EOS R6 Mark II, and while the eye-tracking and sensor performance are mind-blowing, I’m feeling a bit lost regarding the best lighting setup. I’m still using some older Speedlites, but they feel a bit clunky with the new system, and I’ve heard mixed things about the new Multi-Function Shoe compatibility.
I primarily shoot indoor events and the occasional wedding, so I really need something with fast recycle times and rock-solid TTL accuracy. I’ve been eyeing the Canon EL-5 since it’s built specifically for the new shoe, but the price is a bit steep, and I'm curious if it’s actually a significant upgrade over something like the Godox V1 or V860III. Also, has anyone run into issues using third-party flashes on the newer RF bodies? I’ve read some reports about autofocus assist beams not working correctly on mirrorless sensors, which is a bit concerning for low-light receptions.
Are you guys sticking with native Canon EL-series flashes for the reliability, or is there a third-party gem that works seamlessly with the RF mount? I’d love to hear what’s currently living in your camera bag and if you think the native glass—err, flashes—are worth the extra investment!
In my experience, I had shoe issues too, basically dont skip the Canon Speedlite EL-5 for ur R6 II cuz it's SO much more reliable than Godox V1-C Flash for Canon!! Worth it!!
> Are you guys sticking with native Canon EL-series flashes for the reliability, or is there a third-party gem that works seamlessly with the RF mount? yo! seriously, moving to the Canon EOS R6 Mark II is such a game changer, right?? i totally get the flash struggle tho. regarding that AF assist beam issue—yeah, mirrorless sensors basically ignore the old IR grids on DSLR speedlites, which is why they feel so clunky now. if youre looking for alternatives to the Canon Speedlite EL-5 mentioned earlier, check out these two: 1. Godox V1-C Flash for Canon: honestly, the round head gives such fantastic natural falloff. it's way cheaper, but yeah, the shoe can be a bit finicky compared to native gear.
2. Profoto A10 AirTTL-C for Canon: if you have the budget, this thing is literally a beast for weddings. the recycle time is insane and it's rock solid. pro tip: check out the "Flash Havoc" blog! they have a massive breakdown of RF-mount compatibility that saved me sooo much stress. anyway, you might also need the Canon AD-E1 Multi-Function Shoe Adapter to keep your old weather-sealed flashes safe on the new shoe. gl! 👍

yeah i agree native is better!! - Native: reliable
- Third-party: glitchy
- Legacy: clunky
i tried saving cash with off-brand gear but native is way better for weddings i think... gl!
