Looking for a battery grip for my new Canon R5 Mark II. Anyone have recommendations? Ideally something reliable. My budget is around $400. What are your top picks?

tbh I just saw this and wanted to mention that for the R5 II you probably want the Canon BG-R20 instead of the older ones because I think it handles the power draw better for the high-speed video and stuff? I’m still a bit of a beginner but I was worried about the camera overheating or the frame rate dropping so I just grabbed the official one and it has been *incredible* for my long weekend shoots. I haven't done any crazy lab tests but basically it lasted through a whole 4-hour airshow without me even thinking about the battery once which was a huge relief! It’s like $350 so it’s right in your budget and feels way better in the hand than just the body alone. Idk if the cooling fan version is actually necessary for most people though? Maybe if you do a lot of 8K? But the standard BG-R20 has been solid for me so far and the performance feels top-notch.

Honestly, I've been digging through a lot of user reports and there is a massive consensus among most working pros that for a body this advanced, you really should just go with the official Canon OEM accessories. While third-party options might seem tempting to save a few bucks, the technical architecture in the R5 series is so sensitive to voltage fluctuations and duty cycles that its really not worth the risk of a hardware failure during a critical shoot. Most people in the community suggest sticking with the genuine Canon brand because they integrate better with the thermal management systems and the specific high-speed data transfer pins required for the new AF system. If your doing high-bitrate video or maxing out the burst rate, you need that consistent amperage that only the factory gear provides. Basically, dont overthink it—just buy the official grip from Canon and youll be set for years without worrying about their being a compatibility issue or the camera bricking during a firmware update. Stick to the brand name for something this expensive.

I've had great luck with the Canon BG-R10. Reliable and around $350, in my experience.

Before dropping $400, consider if you *really* need the grip. Canon's LP-E6NH batteries are reliable. Extra batteries plus a charger might be a smarter, more flexible, and cheaper solution.

Consider the Canon BG-R10 grip. Check the weather sealing rating carefully; ensure it matches your R5 Mark II. Mismatched seals can cause issues. Happy shooting!

Honestly, I'd consider skipping the grip. I had issues with a cheaper one. Maybe just buy extra Canon batteries? Around $70 each, and no grip hassles.

Vello's grip is solid, though check user reviews for quality consistency. Market's flooded with generics.
