Hey everyone! I recently made the jump to a Canon R6 Mark II, and while the camera is incredible, I quickly realized my old SD cards are a massive bottleneck. When I am shooting high-speed bursts for wildlife or sports, my current UHS-I cards take ages to clear the buffer, which has caused me to miss a few shots already. It is pretty frustrating considering how fast the camera actually is.
I started looking at some of the top-tier V90 UHS-II cards from the big name brands, but the prices are a bit eye-watering, especially for the 128GB or 256GB versions. I am really trying to find a reliable but affordable alternative that can handle the high bitrates and fast burst speeds of the RF system without failing. I have been looking at some V60 options from brands like Kingston or Sabrent, but I am worried about long-term reliability and whether they will actually keep up with 4K 60fps video or if they will just choke during a long burst.
Does anyone have recommendations for a best value SD card that performs well in these mirrorless bodies? Specifically, have you found a V60 card that handles the buffer well enough for most situations, or is it really worth the extra cash to go for a cheaper V90 brand?
Stumbled upon this today and man, I totally feel your pain. I actually tried to go the ultra-cheap route last year with some no-name V90 cards I found on a deal and it was a total disaster... the card literally corrupted during a high-speed burst session and I lost everything. It was SO frustrating. Anyway, for your R6 Mark II, you dont actually need eye-watering V90 prices for most things. I recommend the Lexar Professional 1800x SDXC UHS-II Card 128GB GOLD Series which usually runs about $55. It handles 4K 60fps easily cuz the bitrate isnt that insane. If you need more space, the ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II V60 Gold 256GB is around $95 and honestly feels way more reliable than the super cheap brands. Basically, the lesson I learned is that a high-end V60 is way better than a sketchy V90. Save your cash, these will keep that buffer moving just fine!
Ok so I totally get the frustration because the R6 Mark II is literally a beast but those buffer wait times with old cards are just the worst... i mean it actually ruins the whole experience of having a fast camera right?? In my experience I was super worried about reliability cuz I dont wanna lose files so I spent weeks looking at V60 vs V90 stuff. I guess I am a bit conservative with my gear but for your situation here is what I recommend:
Curious about one thing: are you shooting full RAW or C-RAW? It makes a HUGE difference for that R6 II buffer. Honestly, I have been super satisfied with ProGrade Digital SDXC UHS-II Video Speed Class 60 (V60) 256GB Gold cards. They handle 4K 60fps and long bursts perfectly without the V90 price tag. Also, the Sony SF-E Series UHS-II SDXC 128GB V60 is a really reliable budget option that basically never chokes!
Finally someone says it. Ive been thinking this for a while but wasnt sure.
