What are the must-have essential accessories for Canon RF mount cameras?

Hey everyone! I finally made the jump from my old DSLR to the Canon mirrorless world, and I am absolutely loving the performance so far. However, I am realizing that my old gear setup doesn't quite cover everything I need for this new RF mount system.

I want to make sure I have all the bases covered before I head out for a big shoot next month. I have already picked up an EF-EOS R control ring adapter so I can keep using my older glass, but I am wondering what else is considered a necessity for the RF ecosystem. For example, are people finding that the newer LP-E6NH batteries are mandatory for high-speed shooting features, or can I get away with my older ones for a while?

Also, I am a bit torn on storage options. Should I be investing heavily in CFexpress Type B cards, or are the V90 SD cards enough for general 4K video and high-speed burst shooting? I am also looking for recommendations on body protection or specific accessories that improve the ergonomics for longer sessions, like certain base plates or cages.

  • EF to RF adapter (with or without control ring)
  • High-speed storage (CFexpress vs SD V90)
  • Newer generation batteries

What are the absolute must-have accessories you would recommend for someone building out their Canon RF kit from scratch? I would love to hear about any specific tools or add-ons that have made your shooting experience better or more efficient.

Coming back to this, I went through this last year and was really cautious about overspending. I basically had to decide if the extra speed was actually worth the price.

Just seeing this now... been shooting with the R system since it launched and honestly, you dont need to go overboard right away. Quick question first tho - what are you actually planning to shoot next month? Knowing if its sports or portraits or whatever helps narrow down the essentials so you dont waste money on stuff you wont use. Anyway, heres a few things Ive found useful over the years without breaking the bank:

  • Screen protection is huge. Just get a tempered glass kit from ULBTER Screen Protector or any similar brand. Its cheap insurance for those nice flip-out screens.
  • For carrying the thing, I swear by Peak Design straps. They make swapping between a neck strap and a wrist strap so much faster when you are on the go.
  • If you want some cheap native glass to supplement your EF stuff, check out the non-L prime lenses from Canon RF. They are surprisingly sharp for the price and much lighter than using adapters all day.
  • A decent blower is also a must since mirrorless sensors are basically dust magnets compared to DSLRs. Just grab one from Giottos or any basic kit. Dont feel like you need the most expensive version of everything yet. Just start with the basics...

In my experience, you really gotta get the newer batteries from Canon since they actually unlock those high-speed modes. For storage, just go with SanDisk or ProGrade, you cant go wrong there... CFexpress has way better bus speeds for clearing the buffer i think. Plus, definitely look at some cages or base plates from SmallRig to help the grip. It makes a HUGE difference for long days!!
