okay so i just bought the canon r50 like two days ago and i am honestly so overwhelmed right now because i tried filming my daughters birthday party and the sound is just... its not good at all. there was so much wind noise and you could barely hear her talking over the cake. i have no idea where to even start with microphones like i see these fuzzy things on top of cameras in videos but i dont know if they just snap on or if i need a specific wire? i was looking on amazon and saw some that said shotgun and some that said lavalier and my brain just kind of melted lol. i think my budget is around $100 because i already spent so much on the camera itself but i need something before we go to ginnie springs next friday for our vacation. my logic was that maybe i could just use my phone to record sound but that seems like way too much work to put together later. is there something simple that just works when i plug it in? sorry if this is a really stupid question i just dont want to buy the wrong thing and have it not fit the hole on the side of the camera or something...

> i see these fuzzy things on top of cameras in videos but i dont know if they just snap on or if i need a specific wire? Unfortunately the R50 internal mic is just not as good as expected outdoors. I had issues with cheap generic brands failing mid-shoot before and they were a total waste of cash. Just get the Rode VideoMic GO II Lightweight Directional Shotgun Microphone. It slides onto the top mount and plugs straight in... super easy. That fuzzy thing is a wind shield and its basically mandatory for your vacation to stop that wind noise.

Unfortunately, that built-in audio is just not as good as expected for outdoor stuff. I had issues with cheap generic mics failing mid-trip, so maybe grab the Rode VideoMic GO II Analog/USB Microphone. It is super reliable and doesnt even need batteries, it just draws power from the camera. That fuzzy thing you saw is called a deadcat, and it is a total lifesaver for wind noise.
