What external mic actually works well with the Canon 80D without hissing like crazy? Im honestly so fed up with the audio quality I'm getting right now. Ive been trying to film some sit-down interviews for my local history project here in Chicago and the background static is just killing the vibe. I bought some cheap $40 mic off Amazon last month but it sounds like I'm underwater half the time its honestly pathetic. I need something reliable before my next shoot on Tuesday and I can spend maybe $200 max. Should I just bite the bullet and get a Rode or is there a hidden gem I dont know about? Really need to fix this static issue before I lose my mind...

Building on that, you might want to consider manual gain. I once ruined a shoot when the 80D preamps hissed. Be careful.

Man, that 80D hiss is a total mood killer. I've had similar issues with my older Canon bodies and it usually comes down to the preamps being a bit weak. If you're getting that underwater sound, it might be because the camera is trying way too hard to boost a low signal... I would suggest looking for a powered condenser mic with its own gain control. That way you can turn the camera's internal volume way down to avoid that static, tho you still gotta be careful. I just have a couple questions so I dont point you in the wrong direction:

  • Are these interviews in a noisy area or a quiet room?
  • Do you want a shotgun mic on top of the camera or a lavalier? Usually, unpowered mics sound like garbage on this camera. It's definitely worth spending a bit more for something reliable before Tuesday.
