I'm really loving my 90D for birding, but I'm struggling with harsh shadows in thick brush. I need a flash that can keep up with the 10fps burst speed and offers great reach. Does anyone recommend the Canon 600EX II-RT, or is there a better Godox option with reliable high-speed sync for wildlife?

Ok so, for your situation, I've gotta say my experience has been kinda mixed and tbh a bit disappointing when pushing high burst rates on the 90D. If you're shooting at 10fps, you're gonna hit the limits of most flashes reallyyy fast. I've used both the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT and the Godox Ving V860III-C for Canon, and here's the reality: * Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT: This is the "safe" bet for weather sealing, which is huge for wildlife, but honestly? The recycle time is just not as good as expected unless you lug around the Canon CP-E4N Battery Pack. Without that extra juice, you're gonna miss half the birds in a 10fps burst. It's reliable, but so expensive.
* Godox Ving V860III-C for Canon: People love these cuz of the Li-ion battery, and yeah, the recycle speed is better out of the box. But unfortunately, I've had two of these units fail on me in the field. The build quality is lowkey flimsy and I wouldnt trust it in a damp forest. Basically, if you're doing heavy high-speed sync in thick brush, you're gonna overheat these things. I'd stick with the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT but only with the battery pack for the recycle speed. Just watch out for the heat warnings... I've almost fried a tube trying to keep up with my 90D before. so yeah, safety first. anyway, gl! 👍

Yeah, I’m still pretty new to the 90D and birding, but I’ve been obsessed with the reliability side of things lately. Honestly, I’m always kinda worried about my gear failing when I’m miles away from home. I went with the Godox V1-C because I was told the round head distributes heat a bit better, and I really didn't wanna deal with a flash that just stops working mid-burst because it got too hot... that would be a nightmare when you've finally found a cool owl or something. One thing that really helped me feel safer was adding a Better Beamer Flash Extender. Since it basically focuses the light like a magnifying glass, I don’t have to push the flash to max power to get that reach into the thick brush. If the flash isn't working as hard, it’s way less likely to overheat or miss a beat during those 10fps bursts. I'm still learning the ropes, but I feel like keeping the power settings lower is just better for the longevity of the electronics. Does anyone else worry about the hot shoe getting damaged with these heavier setups, though? I'm always super nervous when I'm hiking through trees...

- honestly, i had issues with slow recycling and overheating...
- basically, the Godox V860III-C Li-ion battery saved me cuz standard batteries just couldnt keep up with 10fps...
