im losing my mind trying to pick a flash for my 5d iv before this wedding in chicago next month. my logic was just go with the canon 600ex ii-rt because its native right? but then i saw the price tag and started looking at the godox v1. some people swear the round head is better for portraits but i read a bunch of forum posts saying the godox pins dont always line up right with the canon mount or they just snap off. i only have like 350 maybe 400 bucks to spend and i cant afford for it to fail mid-reception. if i buy the canon used am i missing out on the godox features or is the third party stuff just too risky for a pro gig?

I've been using the Godox V1-C TTL Flash for Canon on my 5D Mark IV for a while now and honestly, I'm super satisfied with it. I totally get the anxiety about the pins, but as long as you dont manhandle the locking mechanism, it stays put just fine. The round head isnt just a gimmick... it really does make the light falloff look a lot smoother for those indoor reception shots. The best part tho is the lithium battery. Swapping out AA batteries in the middle of a ceremony is a total nightmare, and the Godox battery lasts forever. If you're really worried about reliability, you could buy one and then grab a Godox V860III-C TTL Flash for Canon as a backup. You'd be right around your $400 budget. Having two units is way safer than relying on one used Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT if things go south!

Regarding what #2 said about the Godox pin issue, how often do you shoot off-camera? Im happy with Godox V860III-C TTL Flash for Canon for battery, but Canon Speedlite 430EX III-RT feels more reliable.

^ This. Also, if the Godox pin issue has you paranoid, you should look at the Yongnuo YN600EX-RT II Wireless Speedlite. I've been really satisfied using these for wedding receptions.

  • It speaks the same RT radio language as the high-end Canon gear
  • Reliability is surprisingly solid for a third-party unit
  • Fits your budget perfectly Quick question tho, are you planning to do mostly on-camera bounce flash or do you need a setup for off-camera lights around the dance floor?
