honestly im so over these cheap knockoff grips i bought a generic one for my 90d and it keeps cutting out mid-shoot like it just disconnects and i lose power which is a nightmare since im shooting a game here in chicago this friday. the shutter button feels like mush and half the time it doesnt even register focus so im just standing there losing shots while the action happens. i have about 200 bucks to spend and i need something that actually locks on tight and wont fail me during a long day. is the official canon bg-e14 the only real option or is there another brand that isnt total junk?
Honestly, i totally get the frustration with those cheapies! i went through two of them before i finally caved and bought the real deal years ago. If you're shooting a game in Chicago this Friday, do yourself a massive favor and just grab the Canon BG-E14 Battery Grip for EOS 70D 80D 90D. It is night and day compared to the generic stuff! The build quality is amazing and it actually feels like part of the camera body instead of some plastic toy that flexes when you hold it. Since you have $200, you are totally golden. You can usually find the official one for around $160ish depending on where you shop. The best part is the shutter button... it has that perfect tactile click and the dial feels exactly like the one on top of the 90D. No more mush! Plus, it has weather sealing that matches the camera body, which is a total life saver if the wind or rain picks up at the stadium. I have used mine for years on my 80D and now the 90D and it has never once disconnected or glitched out on me. Seriously, its a tank. Just get the official one and enjoy the peace of mind while you're tracking those players. You're gonna love how it balances out a longer lens too! Good luck at the game!
Regarding what #1 said about "Honestly, i totally get the frustration with those..." - i found a solid middle ground. I've been using the Vello BG-C14 Battery Grip for Canon 90D and i am super satisfied with it. It feels way more heavy duty than the generic junk.
Go with Canon or any of the high-end accessory brands if you want reliability.
